The Wiz's Home: who did it better?

Last night, while I was talking to a friend online, he gave me the link to the GLEE version of "Home" performed by Kristin Chenoweth (sp?). Her version with the cast of "Glee" reminds me of what a glee club would've sounded like singing this (CORNY! lol)

Anyway, this took me back to the versions of the songs as done by Stephanie Mills, Diana Ross and Whitney Houston. Now of the three, who you think did it best?

Stephanie (1975 original):

Diana (1979):

Whitney (1983):

----
Personally I think Ms. Houston overdid it. I think I know another reason why her voice faltered (*coughoversingingcough*). I prefer Stephanie's personally. It's HER signature song.

lol @ "Stephanie owns other stuff"... I have to agree to disagree with you about Nippy. smile

Yes that's all anyone can say about Diana's except for Ross fans. lol

I love Step's 1989 version too:

whistle "I can hear my friends telling me STEPHANIE, PUHLEAAAASE SING MY SOOOOONG!" lol

Stephanie's live version at the Apollo in 1989/1990. Jaw droopingly great.

That was Nippy's GREATEST televised live performance.

With that said, Stephanie sang that song all the way down from her pussy,,,,,ain't NO way in stone cold hell somebody is gonna match that.

Thats like saying, Jennifer Holliday's version of "I'm Telling You" is up for discussion in comparision to the other renditions.

Diana's is the only one that will ever bring tears to my eyes... touched

But Stephanie Mills originally sung that tune and according to the audio of the youtube clip she brought the house down every night with that song!

Whitney's was too slow and though she showed her fantastic early vocal ability and promise from the record industry it was just too "changed" with the lyrics for my personal opinion.

Ego, jealousy and stupidity prevented what could've been a fabulous cinematic revival of the Wiz.

Casting Diane AKA The Original Wicked Witch of the West/East/North/South, is a solid proof that drugs fucked everybody's judgement in the 70s.

Diana did beg whoever was producing it to give her role. lol Berry Gordy didn't want her to do it according to someone on Diana's documentary. When it flopped, Berry went to her and said "told you that shit would flop". lol

I know Diane's deep throat is legendary but it wasn't the case. It was Berry Gordy's plan to revive the Motown legacy, plain & simple. At this point, they were estranged, right?

The director was Lena Horne's ex-husband, Sidney Lumet eek this is the SAME mofo who made the ever-so-brilliant Network and Dog Day Afternoon among a long, long, looooong list of great films. How in the deep black & blue hell did the man get linked to this calamity, thats what I really wanna know? I bet he wall whenever he remembers doing it.

When Stephanie was still signed to Motown, Berry tried to buy movie rights then because he wanted Stephanie and Michael in it. I think when Diana convinced Sidney Lumet to let her do it despite Berry's advice for her not to do it (because Diana was battling Berry for control of her career at the time), Berry did whatever he did to destroy whatever momentum he thought he had so he didn't help to promote it. I think the soundtrack was released on MCA and not Motown. Stephanie left Motown after that.

It upsets me that Stephanie got caught up between those two and took the fall. What a ROTTON scene!

And extremely idiotic, it turned out to be an embarrassment for ALL the parties invloved. I bet she was glad she wasn't part of it.
