Always preferred the Credence version. Rough and earthy.

I like Marvin and Roger's versions of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'. There's a recording of Marvin and Gladys & The Pips together on the Marvin Gaye boxset too.

Roger Troutman funked this track out. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

Glady's and the gents did so well after their exit from Motown, I'm sure this irritated Napolean Berry. What you bet she and Bubba didn't give a flying leap about not being invited

Marvin's version is my favorite, but it sounds great from just about everybody.
Any list of Aretha classics has to include "Don't Play That Song" IMO. She tore it up on that one. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Marvin Gaye: Gladys Knight & the Pips: The Temptations: Creedence Clearwater Revival: The Slits: ---- Originally written by Barrett Strong as his relationship was going down the tubes, this song was originally turned down by Berry Gordy as a "crappy" song after the Miracles recorded it. After Marvin Gaye's version was also left on the recycle bin of leftovers, Gladys Knight & the Pips was able to get a big hit out of it reaching #2 on the pop charts in late 1967. Marvin's version was eventually released after Norman Whitfield's protests and soon eclipsed the Pips', reaching #1. Since then several covers of the song in both Marvin's and Gladys' versions have been issued, mostly in Marvin's key. CHART SUCCESSES: Gladys: #2 pop, #1 R&B Marvin: #1 pop, #1 R&B Roger Troutman: #79 pop, #1 R&B [Edited 5/9/10 11:43am] Ok...I heard the Slits version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine" one day when I was in some Haight-Ashbury t-shirt shop, and my ears started bleeding! Like seriously WTF????? It was absolutely terrible! Thank God they played to original version right afterwards. Marvin's will always be number one in my heart....and aside from the Slits version ....everyone else did a great job in covering this classic.

That's my favorite. I like Gladys' version but Marvin's version wins "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."
