How come Joi's career never took off?

She was kinda like Kelis and Erykah Badu before Kelis and Erykah Badu.

Joi was/is more like the Betty Davis of the 90/00's and the labels couldn't put her in that sardine can they called "neo soul". lol

She also wrote this song and sung this song. Here is the version on the "Panther", soundtrack.

I really love how she sings the song. She sounds like a woman who is really in pain in missing her man. I've been there a few times myself, and when I would listen to this song, it would help me feel so much better because I would feel the same way. nod

I agree she isn't really neo soul, but a label could have done something with her

I really loved The Pendulum Vibe back in 1994, I too thought she was going to make it over. I waited and waited for her second album, but it never seemed to come out. Star Kitty's Revenge finally did get released, but I wasn't too hot on that. Tennessee Slim Is The Bomb is really good, except for the crack smoking George interludes between each song. I hope she does continue to make music, too much talent to go wasted.

Define "career". She's got 4 or 5 strong CDs. That's a career in my book. Why she never hit mainstream is due to the business phasing out original artists in an attempt to make music less relevant while still trying to make money off it.

Very underrated. She replaced Dawn in Lucy Pearl temporarily.
Trivia: How many people know that she's the daughter of former

now deceased?
