Any who i just bought nightclubbing cause it's the one i always see and i read good reviews what album should i get next=] Any one really. But a good one to get is 'Private Life - The Compass Point Sessions'. It is a double cd collection of 12inch/long and dub versions of some of her more popular tunes. Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions is a two disc anthology of recordings by Grace Jones released by Island Records in 1998. Grace Jones recorded three albums with Sly & Robbie in the legendary Compass Point Studios, Bahamas during the period of 1980-1982; Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing and Living My Life. Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions contains long and extended version of her hits, although the CD booklet claims that these haven't been issued before, most of them have in fact appeared on numerous CD re-issues around the world. Other tracks were remixed or re-edited by the PolyGram/Universal engineers in 1998 for this particular compilation - this instead of using the many existing long or extended versions by original producers Chris Blackwell and Alex Sadkin that were mixed and released on vinyl in 1980-1982. The track "Living My Life" appears as an edited remix by Paul "Groucho" Smykle - dating from 1986, which the liner notes fail to mention. Another anomaly on The Compass Point Sessions is that it concludes with "Slave To The Rhythm", a track which was recorded in 1985, in London and with British producer Trevor Horn. Also the mix used, here renamed "Hot Blooded Version", is again an alternate 1998 re-mix/re-edit of the original 12" version entitled "Blooded." This compilation, however, collects what is generally regarded to be Jones' best work and it also offers a well-researched essay and two previously unreleased songs from the Living My Life sessions: "Man Around The House" and a demo recording of Johnny Cash's classic "Ring of Fire." Agreed! Especially Warm Leatherette. Her most recent album "Hurricane" is stellar; I'd highly recommend it as well. * * *

"Warm Leatherette" THEN "Hurricane" (one of the best of the decade!). Both are brilliant. "Nightclubbing" is probably the signature album (with the signature song). I don't own the mid to late eighties more pop oriented albums and only recently bought the disco albums. They're good, but certainly not signature disco. They also aren't the best reflection of Grace's style (except maybe her take on "La Vie En Rose").
As for Lady Gaga, Grace addressed this and blew her off. As for Gaga borrowing from Grace, style wise, yes. As for the music, it's almost doubtful that she was influenced by her music (although she did do her fair share of pop with songs like "I'm Not Perfect"). [Edited 5/26/10 22:38pm]

The early 3 albums she recorded with Sly & Robbie are extremely essential.
And if you want the extended/demo version of the songs from those albums, then like Mikey said, get: I have the rest of her albums, but those 4 are completely fillers free and still sound fresh IMHO.

I have to agree with you on the 'all killer' content of the three albums that you mentioned. They really do sound good to this day. However, being a sucker for all things 12inch and dub, The Compass Point...collection is still the most played of Grace in my collection. [Edited 5/27/10 10:04am]

Are you including "Hurricane" in that mix? It's basically takes the tone and to a lesser extent the sound of those albums, but has some excellent writing and great emotion. That album is not to be slept on! I agree the albums inbetween the Sly and Robbie years are good, but not great. But "Hurricane" was a great welcome back!
