Oddly,I don't remember these songs  In fact,I don't remember any of her solo albums from the late 70s,or any of the singles.I guess she really didn't break through as a solo artist until 1983's 'I'm In Love Again'.That album was a huge success,giving her career the jump-start that it needed. | |

"The Spirit's in It" had traction on the dance charts. But yeah she didn't really get support from labels until "I'm in Love Again" broke her through in 1984. In fact people thought Patti was making a "comeback" but she was hustling between 1977 and 1983. Richard Pryor made some beautiful comments about her singing in his comedy special in late 1978 (which was released as "Live in Concert" in '79). | |

it just wasn't a breakthrough hit for her. Don't laugh at my funk

Hearing the pre-I'm In Love Again material, there were a lot of great songs that, had they been promoted, would've put Patti right up there with Natalie Cole and Chaka Khan in terms of the top R&B divas of that era. But I think Epic didn't know what to do with Patti. Patti LaBelle, Tasty, It's Alright with Me and the self-organized, Allen Toussaint-produced Released featured some great music, as did her first Philadelphia International release, The Spirit's in It but it wasn't until the release of "If Only You Knew", that MANY in the mainstream discovered "oh there's Patti." Then after "New Attitude" confirmed her status, the rest was history. [Edited 5/5/10 13:47pm] | |

When I started going to gay clubs in the early 1990s, that's when I started hearing some of her other LaBelle stuff and earlier solo stuff which is much better than the stuff she was doing in the late 1980s to the present. Actually, I like very little from her after 1983 but lots from her before 1983. Andy is a four letter word. | |

Yessa! Another great and forgotten gem is "Eyes in the Back of My Head" from her "Tasty" album from '78 on Epic! That song is SICK!!!!! She sounds like she's goin' inSANE on that cut! xo Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up. | |
