The Thomas Dolby Set Starting with his first album.
There were so many different releases (around 6?) of... ...The Golden Age of Wireless ...Radio Silence My CD version has a wimpier version of this tune but luckily the LP version i've got includes this more muscular guitar version. ...Airwaves (Radio Edit of the longer 5:12 version) ...Europa And The Pirate Twins ...Windpower (Extended version) ...One Of Our Submarines (12" version) I purposely left the "hit" out of this set. It's been played to death and he's got other material. One of my favorite 80s artists. Music for adventurous listeners tA Tribal Records "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

One of my favorite 80s artists. one of my favorites, too! Btw, I was wondering why I kept hearing different versions of "Radio Silence"! Like everyone else, I had heard "Blinded Me With Science" all over the radio...but I remember one night in DC in '82, down in a Georgetown theater (I think it was just before a midnight showing of "Rocky Horror" , )-they were playing music before the show, and "Europa and The Pirate Twins" came over the speakers---- although had no idea of the title, or who it was at the time, but I was was dying to find out. Later that year, at a record store, I just happened to be going through some 45s.....and I saw a Thomas Dolby single that wasn't "Science". being curious, I just flipped the single sleeve over, saw there were printed lyrics, so I started reading... I was surprised when I recognized the lyrics..."We'll be the Pirate Twins again, Europa, Oh, my country...." I snapped that thing up, and I've been a fan ever since!!!! ... Saw him perform at the Greek Theater in Hollywood back in the early 80's. His music speaks for itself, but I was blown away by his dynamic performance. His music LIVE sounded WAY better than I ever expected it would, and the stage show itself was like a dream. During the show, there was this giant pair of spectacles that hung over the stage that played various video "enhancements" that coincided with the songs. It was an awesome show that I'll never forget. Thomas Dolby has definitely been underrated throughout most of his career.
His music has been the soundtrack for many special moments in my life. There's so much more to Thomas Dolby than "...Science!".

His music has been the soundtrack for many special moments in my life. There's so much more to Thomas Dolby than "...Science!". Amen. I got to see the L.A. stop on his Sole Inhabitant Tour in 2006: http://prince.org/msg/8/185529 One man show, and he "built" each tune from the ground up right onstage. One of mine also. Outside of enjoying his music, I have a great deal of respect for him. Instead of putting out material just to have something out there, when he felt he had nothing to offer up to his standards, he simply stopped releasing material. It's interesting to note that if you take into consideration the work he's done with other artists during that decade (Trent Reznor, Foreigner, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Prefab Sprout, Depeche Mode, etc) along with his own material, that his name doesn't come up here that often. Great post, theAudience! One of my favorite musicians. There's not an album of his that I don't like. They each have a different sound, but they're still uniquely Dolby. He's so criminally underappreciated. Had a friend that saw him in Memphis on his Sole Inhabitant tour. I was quite jealous (he did grab the tour DVD for me, but forgot to get Dolby to sign it!). My friend even got to play the "digital claps" on Europa.
One of those artists that I would spend hours devouring each new release (listening, reading liner notes, etc.). The one thing I don't have of his is the original Wireless release with Wreck of the Fairchild and Radio Silence (guitar version). So I'm really wanting to get a hold of the new remastered edition. That release also has a DVD of the Live Wireless concert video. That alone is worth the price. I'm listening to an audio rip of that concert right now. Thanks again for this post. Glad to know there are other fans of Dolby on here. It reminds me of seeing Dolby on Soul Train in '88 (Airwaves, Hot Sauce). When Don Cornelius asked him about something he replied... "Sign of the times mess with your mind. Hurry before it's too late." [Edited 4/22/10 9:33am]

Music for adventurous listeners Speaking of that --his collaboration with Ryuichi Sakamoto, "Field Work" : http://www.youtube.com/wa...re=related and he was such a great collaborator with Paddy McAloon of Prefab Sprout..there was so much of Dolby's DNA in the 'Two Wheels Good'/'Steve McQueen' album especially in "Desire As"...whe I first heard it in early '85, I just assumed it was a new Thomas Dolby song... http://www.youtube.com/wa...qZKcpOYZME ... I also love the piece, "I Love You, Goodbye" This dropped in the early90's and I was really hoping for more like this...as you pointed out, though I guess I gotta just appreciate the existing work...it reminds me of something the late David Mills said (to 'Elroy') about our favorite artists not producing on demand anymore...that sometimes they've already really given what they've come to give, so we should just appreciate what is there.... http://www.youtube.com/wa...BNcdtT4Z4M ... He played on and co-produced a number of tracks on... ...Dog Eat Dog (1985) To work with Joni Mitchell was a teenage fantasy of mine — she's a sublime artist, set apart from almost anyone. I like the Dog Eat Dog album, but making it was a little like a series of dental appointments. Not my most treasured memory. What's important though is the end result, which stands up on its own. http://emusician.com/em_s...ght_oct07/ Music for adventurous listeners tA Tribal Records "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
