The Eagles (any fans on the org?)

I'm going to see The Eagles in concert for the first time next Friday in San Jose. I thought it would be great to see them live once, especially since they don't come to the Bay Area often. Has anybody seen The Eagles live? What can I expect? Who's seeing them on this tour?

Fave band tracks:

Best of My Love
I Can't Tell You Why
Hotel California
One of These Nights
How Long

Solo:
Sunset Grill
Boys of Summer
All She Wants to Do Is Dance
You Belong to the City
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!
"It's just my imagination, once again running away with me."

Back in the day I was a huge fan of 70s soft-rock and AOR, but not anymore...

Nowadays, Hotel California and a compilation is all I need of The Eagles...

I'm grooving top Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" right now. I'm going to put it in my solo act. What a great song.

As far as the band, I just never totally clicked with them. They made some great music but I never think of them when I think of my favorite bands. I wish I could put my finger on why, but I can't.

I do like "Train Leaves Here This Morning" a whole lot. Great chord progression and harmonies.

And of course, "Life in the Fast Lane" is a classic.

I saw the Eagles in 1994 at Shoreline Ampitheatre and they were great. The setlist was incredible.
I also saw Don Henley solo in 1991 at the same venue.

I recently downloaded the Long Road Out of Eden and I'm trying to take in as much as I can in less than a week. It's good so far, and a real treat for a double cd.

Ok, I promise a review. Hopefully it's ok for the fans who really want to read it. Actually it's more like a mini-review.

This was my first time seeing The Eagles live. By the end of the concert, I felt like it was worth it for a one-time deal. They performed for about three hours with an intermission and one encore. The setlist is below. About 3/4 of the set were the classics and the rest were from their latest release "Out of Eden." I can't compare this performance to anything, but I thought for early 60-something rockers, they still got it. The show was introduced by Glenn Frey as the 'assisted-living tour'. falloff The HP Pavilion was either sold out, or really close to it. I figured the baby boomers would be out in full force, and I was right. The crowd was mostly mellow, except for the radio hits; but by the last six songs or so, the crowd on the floor were mostly out of their seats dancing. I recorded some of the hits on my phone. The recording turned out really loud. lol I'll probably use them for ringtones.

Highlights: Watching the guys alternate instruments throughout the concert, like Don Henley would play drums for a couple of songs and leading like "Hotel California", then switch back to guitar. Glenn Frey would switch from guitar to keyboards and back. I don't know why I was so taken by that, but that stood out for me. Also, the acoustics in the venue was great and the songs sounded like the recordings, with some minor vocal or nuance changes. Joe Walsh, who I've never paid much attention to was clowning alot and showed alot of personality. He led three songs I think, and he showed off awesome guitar work, which riled up the crowd. At least "I Can't Tell You Why" was included in the set, which Timothy led. I walked out recognizing the individual band members better. "Dirty Laundry" was another crowd-rousing song.

Lowlights: It was too mellow after intermission. It would have been better to have more uptempo songs like "All She Wants To Do Is Dance." On the other hand, I was thoroughly disappointed that they didn't perform "The Best of My Love." I really really really wanted to hear that song. I know I'll live, and there's always the recordings.

Concert review: Eagles fail to soar in San Jose
By Jim Harrington

Maybe it's time for a heat wave in hell.

The Eagles, whose leader Don Henley once famously proclaimed would get back together "when hell freezes over," are still riding the reunion trail they embarked on back in 1994. At this point, the second incarnation of the band has been around longer than the first (1971-1980).

Enough is enough.

The group that flew into San Jose for the first of two shows at HP Pavilion looked and sounded pretty tired during much of its concert, which lasted more than three hours. The spark was especially missing during a half-dozen or so of the band's best-known hits. The result was a mediocre performance that didn't do justice to the Eagles' mighty legacy.

Some of that has to do with age. The Eagles' youngest member, Glenn Frey, will turn 62 in November.

"Check your tickets," Frey quipped to the crowd. "This is the Eagles Assisted Living Tour."

Yet, credit the band for taking a risk. Financially, the Eagles certainly didn't need to put out an album of new material, given that their 29-times-platinum "Greatest Hits (1971-1975)" is essentially tied with Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as the biggest-selling album in U.S. history. Still, the group recorded its first full-length studio album in 28 years, 2007's "Long Road Out of Eden," and the album has sold millions of copies across the globe. That's quite an accomplishment — most new studio offerings from such Eagles' peers as Paul McCartney and Elton John don't sniff the upper reaches of the charts.

After opening the show with the concert staple "Seven Bridges Road," the Eagles showcased the newer tracks. Unfortunately, only a handful stood up to the classic '70s cuts. It didn't help that the rough sound mix mucked up the crucial harmonies on "How Long" and distorted the once-compelling dueling guitars at the end of "Hotel California."

The mix wasn't bad enough to disguise the dreadful lyrics, full of heavy-handed social commentary in "Busy Being Fabulous," or the painfully earnest adult contemporary vibe of "I Don't Want To Hear Any More."

The Eagles recovered some momentum as they coasted through a steady succession of hits, including "Peaceful Easy Feeling," "Boys of Summer" and — by far, the best of the lot — "Witchy Woman." But even these offerings suffered from subpar lead vocals from all four band members.

The second set was easier on the ears, but that had more to do with an adjusted sound system than anything actually happening onstage. Joe Walsh, who seemed to be on a coffee break for much of the first set, finally showed up and played some real lead guitar. He also was given plenty of turns on the microphone, but his voice — never a strong point — has deteriorated to the point where such former gems as "Walk Away" and "Life's Been Good" felt like wasted efforts.

The strongest moments of the night came from Henley, which wasn't a surprise. The Eagles could lose any of the other three members and probably still fill arenas. Without Henley, they'd be playing county fairs.

Let's hope it never gets to that point. And while we're at it,let's hope for a heat wave in hell.

It's funny when the critics and fans completely disagree with each other. I don't know what he was expecting. Grant it they are up there in age. I kept thinking dang Don Henley looks old, but he's still got it. Fans love him, that's for sure.

They should've never let go of Don Felder 'cause they haven't sounded the same since. Their new guitarist doesn't have the same chemistry with Joe Walsh that Felder did and can't nobody pull off the solos on Hotel California, King Of Hollywood, Fast Lane and I Can't Tell You Why better than him.
