After 3 pages of this thread, It has dawned on me that most of the USA has been totally funked up during The Funk's peak in American Music History.

blues....Memphis, TN & Jackson, MS jazz....New Orleans, LA rock....Macon, GA hip-hop....New York, NY funk....????? Right THERE^, we have an old problem that has never been solved for decades. The Funk is THE only American music genre that never had its birthplace mention. Does anyone in the org knows where The Funk was invented? You might say it was born in Macon,Ga where this dude they called The "Godfather" named James Brown bought a piar of shoes to dance in but ended up leavin his footprints, but raised in Cincinatti,OH which was the home of King Records his label at the time where he laid down blueprints to funk like "Licking Stick" and "Hot Pants". Oh yeah and Cincy also happens to be the home of this trio of brothers or as some know them as the first family of funk called The Isleys and another set of brothers called Collins with weird names like Bootsy and Catfish and a sister named Lynn [Edited 4/25/10 16:29pm]

Bobby Byrd was from Toccoa, Georgia. The Isley Brothers created their funk between New York and New Jersey (and briefly in California). Lynn Collins is NOT Bootsy and Catfish's sister, she's from Abilene, Texas. And the Collins brothers created their funk with JB and 'em in the South and with P-Funk in Detroit.

It's true, James' proto-funk hits (most of them) were in Ohio when he was with King Records. But after he left King, he recorded mostly in the South. "Sex Machine" was recorded in Tennessee. [Edited 4/25/10 16:32pm]

Down south..augusta Georgia...John Blackwell played at Sims music in Columbia S.C. where I was born.
It's not only the funk but the down to earth chilled attitude. But the humidity gives extra sothern flavour to the funk. Yes ma'am.. It's the same when cariocas say that paulistas can't samba..lol I miss the funk and nature...my only mayor 2 things i love from the south That's some good shit!

Most Ohio bands started off in either gospel, doo wop or "traditional soul" until they moved out of Ohio and adapted a change to their styles. None of the funk artists' music was inbred in Ohio, it grew from hearing James, Sly and 'em. It was a hotbed but not a literal one like Detroit, Minneapolis (eventually), Chicago, New York, L.A., New Orleans and Philly were. [Edited 4/25/10 16:35pm]

I know James was born in South Carolina, but if you ever drove thru there you might as well say Augusta since most of those towns are one light and two left turns over to each other. Let us also remember he had as many orgins to his birthdate/place as Ray Charles had kids.lol If ever you ask anyone born and raised in Macon during the 50's they can tell you about the days when James, Otis Redding, and Little Richard were in direct competition with each other. Shit, if the walls of Douglass Auditoruim could talk you might hear their bands goin at it lol Yes The Isleys recorded a lot at Bearsville Studios NY and they lived in Teneack, NJ for many years, but the orgins of their funk started at home with their family in Cincy. My bad on Lynn bein their sister, but while Bootsy and Catfish may have recorded their best known JB music in the south and later on Detroit with George Clinton, they were already well known around Cincy in the band The Pacesetters. seriousfunk said: seriousfunk said: Close...but I would argue Dayton/Cincinnati Ohio. 1st - King Records was located in Cincinatti that's where James recorded his early and Pre-Polydor shit, including "Cold Sweat" which people who think about such things (like me!) consider to be the first funk record ever recorded. 2nd - Bootsy and Catfish Collins are from Cincinatti. There is just no doubt that James' funk got stankier when these two cats made the scene. Think about "Sex Machine" with anyone other than Bootsy on bass. 3rd - Dayton, OH which is right up the street from Cincinatti, is the home of 1) The Ohio Players 2) Slave & Steve Arrington 3) Roger Troutman & Zapp 4) Sun (had a number of somewhat lesser hits in the late 70s early 80s) 5) Faze-O ("Riding High") Can any other region of the country compare with this legacy? Nevermind, I see this has already been covered! Don't know why I put Cleveland, was thinking of Bone Thugs and Harmony. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Chuck Berry created it in St. Louis.
Bo Diddley created it in Chicago. Jerry Lee and Elvis in Memphis. Buddy Holly in Texas. Even Little Richard would probably attest he wasn't the first. He's only saying he created it because no one credited him prior to the mid-1980s lol
