I do not know the real birthplace of the funk. But the genre known as P-funk was supposedly "born" in Plainfield, New Jersey, hence the name. P-funk was also originally used to describe the groups and musicians surrounding George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic. But Plainfield was the hometown of the original Parliament/Funkadelic line up. As far as funk that came b4 the 70's, i have no idea.

James Brown created most of his funk hits in the South. The Ohio-based groups like P-Funk, Ohio Players and etc. recorded in Detroit, other Ohio groups like Lakeside recorded in L.A. while Slave was New York/New Jersey.

The Meters were from New Orleans and they were definitely "funky".

The Isley Brothers created most of their music in New York though they were based in New Jersey and originally brought up in Ohio.

If thats the case, then I guess its safe to say that funk(like the rest of musical expression created by black people) came from THE SOUTH.
