Yes. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the 60s, which undoubtedly contributed to her eccentric behavior.

Yes, but she didn't want to. Apparently she was misdiagnosed with multiple personality disorder and schizophrenia before "doctors" made the right diagnosis. But they didn't know as much about manic-depression then as they do now.
