Australian band Powderfinger to quit after final tour
SYDNEY
Fri Apr 9, 2010 2:22am EDTSYDNEY (Reuters) - One of Australia's biggest rock bands, Powderfinger, is calling it quits after 21 years, announcing plans Friday to disband later this year after a final Australian tour.

The band, which released its seventh studio album last year, said it had been an "agonizing decision" but they had decided to call it a day after their "Sunsets" tour.

"With the completion of our last album, "Golden Rule," we feel that we have said all that we want to say as a musical group," the band said in a statement on its website. Powderfinger was formed in 1989 and has had a steady line-up since 1992 of vocalist Bernard Fanning, guitarists Darren Middleton and Ian Haug, bassist John Collins and drummer Jon Coghill.

Over the past 21 years Powderfinger has won various music industry awards, enjoyed a list of hit albums and singles such as "These Days" and "My Happiness," and also been actively involved in numerous philanthropic causes.

The band, however, has had limited international success despite a strong following of Australian fans.

Powderfinger said it was partnering with the Yalari group for its "Sunsets" tour, which supports education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from rural and remote areas.
