I don't think anyone would classify Grace Jones as a great singer, but she is a better singer than 95% of the young girls on the Billboard charts today. And she's not a novelty act. Millie Jackson is a trailblazer. That broad is REAL! Nothing novelty about her.

Novelty act? No way. Out there yes, but not a novelty act.

Great singer? hmmm She has a nice voice with the right material. But I'd classify her more as a great vocal stylist than a great singer. She excels with what she's got and she's got a lot, but it's more about the delivery than the technical skill with her.

Perfectly stated.

I love her voice.

And i would like to add that I didn't give Grace that much thought when i was younger, however all that changed the night that i went to see Deee-Lite at the palladium in NYC for New Years Eve 1991... Now i only purchased the ticket because Deee-lite was the Opening act and i really didn't want to see Grace's Set but after that Woman finished her set.. I was HOOKED!!!!

And by novelty, I meant outside the mainstream.

That's not what a novelty act is. Novelty acts are like Les Ketchup, Los del Rio, whoever did "Disco Duck", etc. They aren't ever known outside of 1 or 2 singles and are never around for more than a few years.

For those of u that think Millie is a "novelty" act, she has a message for you.

At the end of her radio show everyday, Millie Jackson plays a snippet of this song. She plays the chorus.

lol

"Disco Duck" was done by DJ Rick Dees.

Great singer? Dunno about that but she sure is scary though! Imagine her doing Strange or Pull up the bumper as a cappella.

The number of artist who have had long and productive careers (who are NOT great singers) far out weigh the number who are considered great singers.

I would say it's because of the marketing/promo machine that is the music industry. People like Patti Austin, Lena Horne, Angela Winbush, Chaka Khan, etc. have not sold as many records as people like Janet and Madonna.
