What is the appeal of Diana Ross?

I don't get it. She isn't that great of a singer and from what I hear, her personality is in the shitter. I mean, I get she is part of history, but really, I can't appreciate her

FIRST

For me, it's just about the great songs they had, whether she sang them or not.

First Holland-Dozier-Holland during the Supremes years and then Ashford & Simpson during moments of her solo career (and CHIC). nod

Some good songs and a distinctive voice.

I think another reason for Diana's appeal besides the great songs and the voice is she trained to become "the supreme diva". Before she worked with Maxine Powell, folks said Diana was thuggish (well in a way she still harbors it) and Maxine's help helped to make her the glamorous diva she ended up becoming onstage.

I like everything about Diana Ross except for the fact she played Dorothy in "The Wiz." Regardless of her iconic singing voice, THAT was ludicrous and nonsensical. confused She should have been the Good Witch from the South or something, instead of being a 37 year old little girl character. disbelief

Stephanie Mills was originally offered the role, Diana convinced execs to replace Stephanie with her because she had "film experience".

Yeah I know, and that was absurd. Berry Gordy was pressured. But a lot of that movie was done incorrectly though: A grown woman playing a child; the consistent "garbage" theme throughout the film; that cheap, flimsy dress Diana had on. That's why it flopped. It's my favorite movie, but I would have done a lot of things differently.

Yeah that film was poorly organized by Motown.

Contrary to popular belief, Berry Gordy did NOT want Diana to do "The Wiz". Plus she and Berry were on real bad terms at the time of the filming. During filming of "Mahogany", Diana slapped Berry hard in his grill after he kept admonishing her during the filming, Diana wanted to come home to tend to her kids and Berry thought Diana wasn't doing "her job" so Diana slapped him, his glasses flew and she screamed "I HATE YOU!" and left.

lol Well since Motown had about a few days of filming, they ended up having a stunt double in the part of Diana in some scenes and then finished filming. I think Diana was pregnant with Chudney by the time the film wrapped. Not sure though.

She was raised in the Brewster Projects and according to some people who were in the label at the same time the Supremes got signed said she was real cunning even then, some said she had a very nasty attitude, Gladys Horton of the Marvelettes once alleged that Diana tried to run over her with her car.

Diana was also not initially raised in the Brewster Projects, she was raised in the more rougher North End projects where Smokey, Aretha and Jackie Wilson also lived at. Jackie was even involved in gang activity there and Diana lived her first 14 years there. I don't know where Mary Wilson lived in Detroit but I do know Florence Ballard and her family kept moving to different areas in Detroit to help Florence's father find steady work, which was not easy to come by. Diana's father was also absentee for the first few years of her life and said that she always felt that her father never really appreciated her, which probably made her the way she is.
