The state of hip hop today Its definitely not as influential to the community in a positive way.
Mainstream hip hop is less diverse musically and lyrically. The subject matter now is very one sided. In the past with hip hop you had more of a balance. You had 2 Live Crew talking about getting some booty, you had N.W.A. talking about gang reality, then you had groups like MC Hammer, Young MC, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Arrested Development. Pretty much every topic that could be discussed was being discussed.

I've never liked hip hop at all but I can respect that is was a really good thing when it first came out. People were talking about real life & real problems as apposed to all the bubblegum pop. I think it really meant something then, but now it seems its all about being a "player" & being rich & famous & just a douche in general

Yeah, that´s why I hate it. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

I hope it fucking dies because ever since '97, it just sounds like a crappy P. Diddy rip-off, pop music shit!!!!

I don't think hip-hop is dead. It's just the wrong artists get signed, like in every other genre now. But there are a few rappers that I like. I even started a thread about a new one today (Diggy Simmons), and I NEVER start threads, so because of him I still have some faith in the future of hip-hop. The state of hiphop is sexier than ever. I do nothing professionally. I only do things for fun. johnart: Acrylic's old bras is where tits of all sizes go to frolic after they die. Tit Heaven.

That is false. a gang of dope albums came out around the dawn of the new millenium. HipHop became too popular. most of the consumers are casuals and they want to hear thugged out dance music. Record Labels know this and so they give the people what they want. Rap music with substance and creativity is looked down upon by most listeners. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

I'm not saying all rap at that time and the early 00s was bad, but come on. Rap music changed drasically in the late 90s!!!!

^
Of course it changed but you could argue that there was just as much good hiphop as there was bad during that time period. 1997=wutang 4ever come on now. hiphop was still thriving back then. just because Nas sold out doesnt mean everyone else did. I have to agree. Hip-hop was still alive and booming in 1997. I think rap started to fall out of favor with me starting around 2002-2003.

Yeah I know, but still, some of it was crappy. I love nas, but man going to Def Jam was such a bad move on his part. I really do wonder why. BTW, I like Wu but they Sold out too.

In the 1980s, the good rap (the ass shaking jams) was being played on R&B radio and the shit hop (the stripped down slow beat stuff with some talking) was underground. In the 1990s, the tables turned and the radio started playing the shit hop and the good stuff went underground. Nowadays, all of it is shit hop. Andy is a four letter word.
