Now Kristin Hersh is kicking Prince's ass http://meandmybigmouth.ty...ooked.html
In what I think is a genuine world first I am absolutely delighted to announce that The Friday Project will be publishing the new album by Kristin Hersh as a book.
Yep, you read that correctly, an album being released as a book. Here's how it works. Crooked will be a hardback book containing stunning artwork, the lyrics to each track, an essay by Kristin about every song and an exclusive sneak preview of her forthcoming memoir Paradoxical Undressing. It will be a beautiful object with beautiful content. And each copy will contain a digital code which you can use to access a treasure trove of online content including: * the Crooked studio album to download * full recording stems for each track so that fans can remix them * track by track audio commentary by Kristin * exclusive video content * out-takes from the recording sessions * a forum enabling fans to interact with Kristin - Q&As, live webchats etc. This full content is only available by purchasing the book. [...] We publish Crooked on June 10th and aim to make it available in all good bookshops as well as record stores. Kristin will be over in the UK to promote it and play some live dates and she may well be playing the odd acoustic set in a bookshop near you. See? THAT is how an artist behaves if she loves her latest work and wants the world to hear it: she cares for it, communicates to fans, accepts the help of others in making it an even nicer experience, and then PROMOTES it. It isn't rocket science. © Bart Van Hemelen

It's a shame our Princey could never get it together to do the whole 'independent' thing right. I always felt an artist that was already as well-known as he was when he split with Warners, and as talented as he is, could have done well in this age of high-speed broadband connections and digital media. Yeah, I'm not being overly down on the guy or anything. Just that the overwhelming impression I get from reading feedback from people that've signed-up to his internet ventures is one of dissatisfaction - especially this most recent time around. Just never seemed like he's quite capitalised on the advantages of that way of working. I mean, for example, there seem to be bootlegs in abundance, so the demand is there for extra material; and I remember Pearl Jam fans talking about how they'd been able to download all the concerts from a tour a few years ago. He could've done incredibly well off of something similar, and put those cashing-in on his work illegally out of business. Just kind of a shame he never seemed to get anything like that, or something that fans really felt 'wowed' by, off the ground. Oh, that's right... NOTHING!!!! It has to do with Prince because it's comparing her book to 21 Nights, as well as comparing her online distribution to Prince's.

He's just trying to start some stupid-ass competition. I don't think Kristin Hersh or whoever he slurps on this site isn't even thinking about Prince when they put together their website. Kristen Hersh was one of the founders of Throwing Muses in the 80's. Currently she's balancing her solo music while leading the more aggressive sounding 50 Foot Wave:
She maintains a pretty strong connection with her fan base. I don't know if it's a fair comparison...I'm sure you could find plenty of hugely established household-name artists who treat their fans better than Prince.

Of course most on here wouldn't know who Kristin Hersh is. They are too busy comparing madonna and janet. Damn shame.
Even if someone isnt in the know this project sounds pet shop worthy fandom. Now you got me on a TM hunt. God how the members of that group battled to keep music alive in the 90s. one of my faves. That's true, but it is also true that "good bookstores" and "record stores" will add up to about 10 stores worldwide. This simply isn't on the same level as a Prince release and has no no real relevance to what he does. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

^Well I don't give a rats ass what prince does that's why I didn't even bother to mention him. What Hersh is putting out there looks interesting and for fans as I stated it's up there with how the Pet Shop Boys do things. And there are some folks who have no idea who Chill Rob G., Roy Hargrove or Janelle Monae is....What's your point? Like I said, let's not try to connect the ambivalence some folks are showing just because they never picked up Last Splash...Most of the "who gives a fuck" reaction is because of Bart's constant "this artist is better than Prince" threads on a Prince site no less....lol How else do you think people will react to this...If Bart wanted to put us on to a great artist he should just make a thread about it like everyone else does in this section....If YOU want to put folks on to new music, try not to to act like an asshole about it... Trust me, we will still think you sit at the cool table... [Edited 3/13/10 5:24am]

IDK. I believe Prince's definition of what an indy artist is and what we believe to be an indy artist are two very different things.
This Kristin lady sounds like she got it together. Prince wants total control of his stuff and there's nothing wrong with that. But the problem with how Prince does it, is that as good as he is creative and production wise, he sucks in regards to promotion. He does things as if on a whim. Everybody knows that's not how to do business, except Prince.

Everybody knows that's not how to do business, except Prince. Some things he does on a whim, but IMO lately he treats his music as a temporary, disposable commodity. He records it quickly, releases it, and after literally a few months loses interest. He is not creating timeless music - he's creating "in the now". The 21 Nights book could have been a legacy-confirming collection of 30 years of photos and an accurate representation of one of the concerts or aftershows. Or, it could have focused on the behind-the-scenes stuff with candid photos. Instead, we got a vanity project akin to a fashion magazine and a horrible music CD. I love Prince, and can find something good on each of his releases, but people need to get over the idea that he's the best of the best out there right now.
