True, I will say this. Seeing him do it on TV, is nothing compared to seeing him do it live. I remember, when I saw him at the 30 anniversary special, he seemed to be in top form that night and seeing him do it live, was just NUTS! I have seen people do it before and after him, but his just has something extra to it.

Yeah i had the honour of seeing him live a few times. He mastered that shit, backwards, forwards, sideways, in circles. Dug his robotics too, any riffing of JB's moves, i liked all that shit.

Anyway back to Motown25... lol

How so?

Of course it was a electrified performance, no doubt.

But the moonwalk was only a big deal to those who never seen the dance before.

exactly, marrk. to funk and andy, the moonwalk wasn't a 'big deal'; however, *most* people had never seen anyone do it, and the way which mj did it (as shorttrini points out) was what set people to talking. even they can't deny that that moment is what people remember to this day about motown 25.

That has to be the most requested clip on Youtube. Also, I saw an interview with Jeffery Daniels of Shlamar. He told the interviewer that although the moon walk was not new, Michael not only made it his own, but also made it accessible to those who might not have seen it.

All these years later, almost everywhere it's reported that "Motown 25" was when/where Michael introduced the Moonwalk. But I remember when I was watching (...can't believe it was so many years ago), Michael's Moonwalk wasn't anything "we" hadn't seen already. I remember the next day, when everyone was talking about it, it was like: "Oh yeah, and Michael did his Moonwalk last night", but it wasn't like that's where he introduced it.

When I see the replays of "Motown 25" today, it still seems like just a few months ago when I was watching the original broadcast. Time is a funny thing.

no, i watched on tv, like everyone else.

i'm glad to see that most posters remember it as i do...that the mj moment was the most talked about part of the show. funkpill and vainandy are in the minority on this one.

How so?

But the moonwalk was only a big deal to those who never seen the dance before.

So it was no big deal.

That move was going on in the mid 70's.

When I saw clips of his performance later doing "The Moonwalk" and heard people on TV raving about it for damn near a week, I just laughed and sayed to myself...."Hell, that ain't nothing but The Glide or The Backslide. They've were doing that on "Soul Train" and "Black Gold" a few years ago and it's out of style now". lol

nod Though while it was still dynamic to watch, it was nothing "we" hadn't seen before.

"The Moonwalk" was an extension of "The Robot", which Michael Jackson ALSO made his own on the Jackson 5's hit "Dancing Machine". "Get It Together" was also another big hit right around the same time. That's when "Pop-Locking" was just kicking in (...all early to mid 70's).

Back in those days, Fred "Rerun" Berry had as much to do with those dances popularity as Michael Jackson did. Then, a decade later, there was Michael 'Boogaloo Shrimp' Chambers, better known to many as "Turbo" in the "Breakin'" and "Electric Boogaloo" movies (...of course we all know who won the dance-off in the end, lol).

Whoever owns the rights to it needs to put it on DVD and Blu Ray!

I saw a rebroadcast from France from either 1987 or 1988 and they included segments with Stevie (after he had released Characters) talking about the show and Motown's history in between peformances. I like that version too, but I think it was edited

I remember seeing Adam Ant's part and then seeing Diana walk on stage during his performance. I was like "Was she supposed to part of the performance?" eek lol
