These lists are so subjective, but typically what I do is instead of bitching about the specific rankings, determine if the guitarists deserve to be on the list (Of course, I think the list should be changed to "top guitarists in rock/pop genres).

That said, I could see legitimate reason for the first 9 to make the list. Keith Richards I thought was somewhat debatable at 10, but yeah, I guess on a list of 100, he may arguably have a spot....

From there it just went downhill. Had to jump down to Jeff Beck 4 more slots, and it got worse.

With the inclusion of the Ramone on there however, I decided that this list is mislabeled.

It should be called "Top 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL ROCK GUITARISTS of all time", because between him and Kurt Cobain, influence definitely seemed to be worth more than talent.

I dont like these kinds of lists seem to always make black players secondary. OK Hendrix is always number 1 because it is just too incredibly undeniable. BB King is usually the obligatory black blues entry with Robert Johnson. Wes Montgomery is thrown in for jazz if they even acknowledge jazz players - that is rare. Chuck Berry never gets respect for inventing rock guitar. Eddie Hazel will get on too low on the ranking - sometimes. They wil make a list of 100 players and about a dozen will be black. Everyone who plays electric guitar in rock owes Hendrix and Berry.

And who is playing better than Prince right now? Where is Ernie Isley, Jesse Johnson, Dez Dickserson, Mark Hics (Drac from Slave), Michael Hampton, Vernon Reid, Kendell Jones (Fishbone) in these lists made for and about white boys?

Prince has been playing better than Sanatana for the last 15 years. And Steve Vai wishes he could beat Stevie Ray Vaughan - even dead.

The 100 best guitarists are whomever you like or each one of us likes. The editor's of Rolling Stone don't play guitar. Jann Wanner is probably more interested in the uh, flute.

Guitar-wise for Rock and Roll it all goes back to Mr. Chuck Berry. And he doesn't get credit for his clever lyrics. They always told a story and there was a great deal of wit in them.

I think every guitar player has played a Chuck Berry lick.

Frank Zappa should be in the top 5, Prince in the top ten. Steve Vai is just a shredder, so it is good not to see him on the list.

Van Halen should be in the top ten. There is a crazed bias against heavy metal.

Jimi Page should be higher. Clapton should be lower. Slowhand is one overrated mofo.

Rolling Stone tried to fix their royal fuck up by having a reader's poll on who the most underrated guitar player was, and low and behold, Prince won!

That's most likely because orgers flooded that damn website and damn near shut it down!!!

I don't think he was pissed at all. You see him smiling when Prince leaned off the stage.

Plus, when Tom played the Superbowl Halftime Show, he said he talked to Prince about doing it. H

I don't think Tom had a problem with it, I KNOW Dhani Harrison didn't have a problem with it!

That kid's smile told the whole story.

smile Roger Troutman and Zapp was/are one of the baddest underrated musicians that came out of Dayton, Ohio after "Sun", "Ohio Players", and "Slave". There was an interview a few years ago where the reporter said they walked into his dressing room at a show and he was just ahem, "messing around" playing a piece from Stanley Kubric's 2001: A Space Odyssey lol Best believe the man was far far more than just "That guy with the vocorder".

Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme)

Mike Bloomfield (Electric Flag)

Roger Troutman (Revisited 4 those who think/thought he was just a vocorder, "More Bounce" and "Computer Love")

Jesse Johnson (The Time)

Jellybean Johnson (The Time-the guitars you hear were played by Jellybean and not Jesse like I thought 4 a long time lol)

Henry Garza

George Johnson (Brothers Johnson)

Tom McDermott (Rick James)

Yep, dhani was stoked. there was a soundbite of him immediately after looking for Prince to give him a hug (doubt he found him lol )

Don't pay any attention to the Rolling Stone rag... it's become irrelevant and they know it. They've had to resort manufacturing drama because if they didn't, people wouldn't bother reading their magazine at the bookstore.

This "100 Best Guitarists" article is from 2003. I don't know if that matters or not, but no one ever agrees on who should be on these lists or how high or low they should be listed.

ernie isley is an underrated great guitarist.

early pictures of jimi hendrix and the isley brothers circa, 1964

In February 1964, Hendrix won first prize in the Apollo Theater amateur contest. Hoping to land a gig, Hendrix made the club circuit and sat in with various bands. Eventually, Hendrix was offered the guitarist position with the Isley Brothers' back-up band and he readily accepted. Hendrix' first studio recording occurred in March 1964, when the Isley Brothers, with Hendrix as a member of the band, recorded the two-part single "Testify". Hendrix then went on tour with the Isley Brothers.

Anybody who actually plays the guitar (so I'm guessing that doesn't include whoever compiled this list) would tell you Kurt Cobain is a very, very average player.
