Interesting chart! There's a lot of 70s lite FM leftover aesthetic here, coupled with a few songs that would come to shape the new decade ("Call Me" for instance). I personally feel that chart music peaked from about 1981-1984.

It's amazing how many 'quality' songs we had on the charts back then! I pretty much like most of those songs, these being my favorites:

Yes, I'm Ready - Terri De Sario with KC
Longer - Dan Fogelberg
On the Radio - Donna Summer
Another Brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd
Do That to Me One More Time - The Captain & Tennille
Working My Way Back to You/Forgive Me, Girl - Spinners
The Second Time Around - Shalamar
Too Hot - Kool & The Gang
Rock with You - Michael Jackson
Special Lady - Ray, Goodman & Brown
Ride Like the Wind - Christopher Cross
Heartbreaker - Pat Benatar
I Can't Tell You Why - Eagles
Call Me- Blondie
Off the Wall - Michael Jackson
With You I'm Born Again - Billy Preston & Syreeta
This Is It - Kenny Loggins
Come Back - The J. Geils Band

Back then,it was actually fun to listen to the radio because we had an abundance of great songs.

"I Can't Tell You Why" by the Eagles deserves a thread of its own! music That one song puts todays' pop music to shame!

Like I mention my the Air Supply thread, 1980-82 was a transitional period for modern pop culture. With disco "dead" and dance-pop not being "born" yet, I say the songs that were on Billboard Hot 100 in 1980 said it all.

mad @ Christopher Cross

Please tell the DJ that he will NOT play anything by that artist! You know he is just as responsible for Whitney as Air Supply, Anne Murrey & Clive Davis were.

The thing is that you had so much variety, i think it comes from a few things, ONE is the fact that the times everyone wanted to be different than the other guy. TWO you had so much variety because you didnt have such restriction at radio as far as playlists and also DJ's werent given a strict thing they had to follow, you had dj's breaking songs on a constant basis, playing album cuts not singles, playing b sides etc... If you scan this chart you see alot of different styles, you see RB bands!! AND also a Big factor is U dont see AGE-ISM the kids didnt rule the charts, ringtones didnt exist and things like that, that are plaguing todays climate of direction.
