These lists are so subjective, but typically what I do is instead of bitching about the specific rankings, determine if the guitarists deserve to be on the list (Of course, I think the list should be changed to "top guitarists in rock/pop genres).

That said, I could see legitimate reason for the first 9 to make the list. Keith Richards I thought was somewhat debatable at 10, but yeah, I guess on a list of 100, he may arguably have a spot....


From there it just went downhill. Had to jump down to Jeff Beck 4 more slots, and it got worse.

With the inclusion of the Ramone on there however, I decided that this list is mislabeled.

It should be called "Top 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL ROCK GUITARISTS of all time", because between him and Kurt Cobain, influence definitely seemed to be worth more than talent.

I dont like these kinds of lists seem to always make black players secondary. OK Hendrix is always number 1 because it is just too incredibly undeniable. BB King is usually the obligatory black blues entry with Robert Johnson. Wes Montgomery is thrown in for jazz if they even acknowledge jazz players - that is rare. Chuck Berry never gets respect for inventing rock guitar. Eddie Hazel will get on too low on the ranking - sometimes. They wil make a list of 100 players and about a dozen will be black. Everyone who plays electric guitar in rock owes Hendrix and Berry.

And who is playing better than Prince right now? Where is Ernie Isley, Jesse Johnson, Dez Dickserson, Mark Hics (Drac from Slave), Michael Hampton, Vernon Reid, Kendell Jones (Fishbone) in these lists made for and about white boys?

This "100 Best Guitarists" article is from 2003. I don't know if that matters or not, but no one ever agrees on who should be on these lists or how high or low they should be listed.

Anybody who actually plays the guitar (so I'm guessing that doesn't include whoever compiled this list) would tell you Kurt Cobain is a very, very average player.
