Harley, Harley, Harley. cool

Still can't get over the maturity in your musical tastes based on your age.
I've always have been simultaneously stunned and impressed by this fact.
So big props to Mr. Abdullah for laying such a solid foundation.

Most of the tunes in your set i've heard before and dig so i'll comment on the others.

Moods:
It looks like this comes from a pretty rare self released LP.
There's one other tune on YouTube...

...Funk It Out

Info on this group is as rare as the LP. So, if you've got a physical copy, you're one of the lucky ones.

The Chosen Few:
From what I could find, doing reggae covers of R&B hits was this popular Jamaican group's thing.
So if that was something your Dad dug, he picked the right band.
They have a cover of Acker Bilk's Stranger On The Shore that's... confuse...different. wink

Just a quick word on Jimmy Scott.
For all those that are "music fans"...

...If You Only Knew is a must see/have.

Great set! hug

1 - Peanut Butter: NO exclaim YOU exclaim DIDN'T exclaim GO exclaim THERE exclaim STRAIGHT exclaim FROM exclaim THE exclaim GATE exclaim clapping worship I have always LOVED THIS SONG! biggrin

Ok, I don't care if anyone wants to get offended about this stereotyping but BLACK MUSIC (I know there supposedly aint no such thing) USED TO BE FUNKY! I mean come on, how the hell can Peanut Butter inspire such a killer song? It's because Black musicians used to be able to THROW DOWN. What happened? sigh I'm sure Peanut Butter is a euphomism for something but I can't figure out what. Can you clue me in? lol

2 - Afro Disco Beat: Reminds me of stuff that would be playing in the next door neighbors house where my cousin used to live. We used to go over and play with the kids. When you entered the house, no problem. When you left though was this picture of the mom above the door and she was nekkid on a leopard rug with her big afro eek lol The 70s, society used to be real lax lol

This isn't something I would listen to often, too repetitive but I appreciate the mood and vibe this presents nod

3 - Grooving When we Meet : mushy Just lovely to hear falsetto on men. love2

4 - Sunshower: I love how inspired EVERYONE was during this period to sing about the sun, the weather and nature in general. All that hippy loving that is so easily dismissed nowadays but really, what a beautiful song! sun love mushy Never heard this before and I LOVE. IT!

5 - Wild Little Tiger: OH. YES! What a SICK colab clapping

6 - Alfie: The Sweet Inspirations. Never heard any other version than Dionne's but I love this take. Who came first, Dionne or Sweet Inspirations? This is such a WONDERFUL song no matter who is singing it. Well I'm sure someone out there could mess it up but this is just fantastic. Those harmonies worship

7 - In the Rain: See what I'm talking about? More nature songs touched

8 - Please Give Me a Chance: Sentimental mushy

9 - Anymore: Gosh, this reminds me of something that would be playing in my Grandma's neighbor's house sigh They had their whole house decorated like a Hawaiian beach with tiki torches, Hawaiian Masks on the walls, birds hanging from the ceiling. I mean it was just the coolest house. Reminded me less of a beach party and more of what it would look like if the Tribal Elders gathered to celebrate something big.

10 - The Jitterbug Waltz: How universal this kind of song is to our grandparents era. Very comforting.

I swear, I need EVERY SINGLE MIX YOU HAVE MADE/WILL MAKE clapping worship mushy

I have a halfway written review of the Wintermix, which floored me and brought me to tears, so you'll get that soon enough but you are like the Congressional Library and Smithsonian wrapped up in one. lol

Your mix is everything and full of surprises. They all are. This mix filled me with so much nostalgia, to the point of a little bit of sadness. This wasn't music you'd hear specifically in my house growing up, but music was enjoyed so prolifically back then that I was exposed to the soundscape you presented in other's houses.

Thank you for sharing a piece of your dad's life with us. I SO wanted to be in your childhood bedroom with the door cracked open so I could hear Dad and friend's laughter and the sweet music that accompanied it. Just love this mix love2 Just love YOU! love

Richard hug

See, I never thought about analyzing this song(Peanut Butter) untill you pointed out lol But Dan Blackman is a MAD MAN, ain't no sense of pickin' his brain...

And you should def get into Kid Creole & The Coconuts discography, the trippy element of their music is right up your alley, taste wise.

As for Johnny Ace, I'm a SUCKA for the early stages of R&B music,,,, there's a WEALTH in Johnny Otis' signed aritsts, Savoy & Atlantic records of the 50s era.

Johnny Ace is probably more known for his..

Most of these are totally new to me! biggrin

1. Twennynine - Peanut Butter (1979):
Well hot damn!! What a hot way to kick things off. This song put a big smile on my face. Fun lyrics, and a bouncy beat made this a great intro.

2. Toney Allen - Afro Disco Beat (1977):
This was not bad. Seems like something my dad would be playing. I must admit my finger was hoovering over the 'skip' button during the long intro (I can be impatient) but I needed to hear where this was going.

3. Moods - Grooving When We Meet (1978):
Very catchy song. I like the lead singer's high voice.

4. Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band - Sunshower (1976):
I recognized this from M.I.A.'s sample of it boxed This is a cute and cheerful song. Not really doing to much for me, but it is nice and happy.

5. The Isley Bros & Jimi Hendrix - Wild Little Tiger (1964):
I liked this alot coming off of the last song! I'm surprised I hadn't heard this before. Very cool little song.

6. The Sweet Inspirations - Alfie (1968):
Despite not being a big "music person" disbelief my mom loves this song and I can imagine her singing it right now. This is another one that makes me smile.

7. The Chosen Few - In The Rain (1976):
I've heard this song a ton of times before, but it sounded different! hmmm Like there were more harmonies and less flute(?) I adore this song, but not particularly this version.

8. Little Jimmy Scott - Please Give Me A Chance (I wanna say 1951):
Okay, I can't explain it, but songs from this era that sound like this always make me think of a depressed person getting drunk at an old piano bar...I kind of like imagining that though.

9. Johnny Ace - Anymore (1954):
Romantic tune. Very simple, and classic.

10. Fats Waller - The Jitterbug Waltz (1942):
Something about this song is so comforting! Although it is not like what I'd typically put on, it reminds my of riding to school in the back seat of my grandparents car.

I really enjoyed your mix Harle! Lots of new stuff to me, and most of it really good! I liked especially how you wrapped things up in the 50's with some very classy sounding music. You have such refined taste.
If you will, so will I

I am so backed up with writing reviews, but I just want to let you know I loved your mix. It's exactly what I expected from you... and MORE. Besides a great collection it's also a reminder I am just a nubie when it comes to a lot of these artists, so this is also going to be a starters point for collecting.

I have fallen so behind on listening to the mixes, so I apologize for a late review.

Peanut Butter Came out the year after my birth. Loved the funk from that time. I admit I'd never heard this, but I need to hear more! Loved this song! Made me just want to "funk out in every way!" biggrin

Afro-Disco Beat Wow, the musicianship is just...wow! nod

Grooving When We Meet Love the falsetto voice! I could listen to this on repeat! I can see why your daddy did! music dancing jig

Sunshower This was a cute, catchy song that just made me feel happy. Good, positive energy. flower

Wild Little Tiger It's got that classic Jimi sound in it & I love it! Reminded me of "Wait Until Tomorrow." Had that similar vibe. I've never heard this & now need it for my ipod. biggrin

Alfie Lovely voices. Yet another song that I need to add to my collection.

In The Rain Nice to hear another version of this. I was just listening to Xscape's version the other day. This song has always been a favorite of mine.

Please Give Me A Change I can see how this song calmed you down. It is just so soothing.

Anymore Awww... this song touched me. touched Probably since I'm Lil Miss Feelings, but I could listen to this right after listening to "Sincerely" sung by The Moonglows or even Connie Francis while writing poetry with the lights dimmed & some candles burning.

Jitterbug Waltz Ah! Such musicianship! I imagine couples dressed to the 9's just dancing the night away. Such a classy time.

Your mix was completely personal & I love when people do that. Thank-you for introducing me to such great pieces! My daddy's a guitar player so I heard more guitar driven themes growing up. I, myself... love the keys. thumbs up!
