NEW YORK – Patti LaBelle thinks some people shouldn't be on "American Idol" — and she's not talking about the contestants.

"Some of the judges, I don't think they're qualified to even judge," she said in an interview Wednesday.

The veteran R&B diva wouldn't say which judge she thought was lacking on the hit Fox show, which has Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres picking America's top singers. Tuesday's "Idol" episode saw 12 female semifinalists competing.

LaBelle said she was asked to be a judge on the series before Paula Abdul; a rep for the show had no comment on whether she was. LaBelle feels like the judges' comments to the contestants are too mean.

"The comments that were made, they could make you like wanna kill yourself," the 65-year-old singer said.

LaBelle's advice to singing hopefuls: "If you believe in yourself, just go for it. What do you have to lose? And when people tell you 'You can't,' you have to say, 'I can.'"

Ellen is not qualified. I've watched her lame attempts at being an "Idol Judge" and she's awful. She doesn't even know how to critique the contestants.

I want paula back , Kara is annoying and I like ellen but not feeling her as a judge.

That's true. Ellen said herself, to one of the contestants yesterday, that she doesn't know how to judge them "technically." I kinda figured that before she even started. Since she is a comedian who doesn't work in music, she might just be there for comic relief, lol.

Maybe Patti can take Simon's place when he leaves. That would be great.

American Idol sucks ass anyway so she's right.

Kara - well, she can write decent songs, but is she really a good judge of talent?

That's a question,not a comment.
I hadn't heard of her before AI, is she a singer, producer. what?
I love Patti Labelle, but there are certain qualities that make for a singer.
I just think that a lot of potentially good performers get overlooked in order to make room for the "blooper crew." I understand that this is one of the major reasons that AI is tuned in to, but it's gotta really old listening to the various non-singers.
