I don't know much about Clive Davis other than he has a good ear for what is popular and he championed certain artists that I thought were incredibly talented.
Whitney is one of them. Say what you will about the music business, but Whitney is facing middle age, a bitter divorce, and is just coming out of a horrible, horrible drug addiction. Most of Whitney's woes are her own fault. This tour is an opportunity for her to make some money, do something positive, and rebuild not only her career but her life. I agree that she shouldn't have taken it on the road before she was ready because she's not only doing more damage to her legacy, but also cheating her fans of the show they thought they were going to get. But it's a bit much. Janet didn't have a drug problem; her career's in decline. Madonna didn't have a drug problem; her career is on the tabloid pages rather than in the studio. Anita Baker, who? Most of the artists in Whitney's generation cannot sell records at the same level as in the 80's. Ten years to fifteen years from now, we'll probably see Gaga in the same position. The music business eats its young and women suffer much more than men. For every Aretha, Patti, and Teena, you will have hundreds of "pop" stars who just flame out. Whitney's redemption has about as much as a shot as Mike Tyson has of becoming heavyweight champion again. Maybe her *best* days are gone, but she actually had talent. She can recover from this, but it won't be overnight. By the media piling on like this...she's gonna be on the Old and Busted Dr. Drew tour faster than you can say Tom Sizemore.

Labels just don't have money like that anymore. That comeback story costed him (the label) some serious money, I'm sure. Maybe she WAS on an up swing and couldn't handle the pressure of it all and turned once again to her fix. I pray this is not the case though. I wish her well in health, even if she can't no longer bring the goods on stage. | |

A whole lot of love for Whitney Houston

It was as if her audience at Acer Arena really wanted her to succeed in the wake of bad reviews from her Brisbane show earlier this week. During the first half she rocked the audience, who were on their feet even before the first song. The second half was not so successful. She returned in unflattering black sparkling pants and woolly vest and during her acoustic and gospel songs she couldn't reach some of the higher notes. Some in the audience described the concert as "bizarre and weird'', with Houston stopping and starting in the middle of songs. But the show stopper was I will Always Love You. There was big break in the middle of the song as she went to the back of the stage, returning to lift the roof. Despite her patchy performance and at times incoherence, the audience warmed to her. Whitney needed more of tracks like THIS^ in her career and much less adult contemporary pop. But that very easy for me to say, since I was more a fan of Janet, Expose, The Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation, The Mary Jane Girls, Madonna (when it was cool for straight men to like her!), Michel'le, Teena Marie, Taylor Dayne, Kylie Minogue, and pretty much any female artist that could make me dance.  | |
