Discovering Tina turner

So I was never into Tina before.

In fact I think she got n my nerves a little.

But now I like her! I lie her!!

I don't much about her tho.

I remember when I was little my mom watching her on oprah the one time. N I always hear the jokes about ike n Tina but really have no clue wat that is. And isn't there a movie or something?

I mite become a Tina turner fan! I dunno yet
I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure
I layed down with love and I woke up with lies
Whats it all worth only the heart can measure
It's not whats in the mirror but what's left inside

She's the shit. Period. Some of her post post-Foreign Affair (1989) stuff is a bit generic... but it's still good, because of her.

She was the first artist I ever stanned for.

I have a soft spot for her old work with Ike Turner. Even though their relationship was sometimes overshadowing the music, that music is still very hot. Nutbush City Limits get me E-VE-RY single time.

i did "the nutbush" in my meringue wedding dress
my mum taught us how to do it as little girls, after her and dad went to see Ike and Tina perform. I actually had my feet doing the moves while stopped at the lights just recently lol

The movie of her life "What's Love Got To Do With It" will totally inspire you; watch how she leaves her jackass husband and starts with nothing all over again, not a dime in her pocket...only to rise like a phoenix from the ashes! biggrin

Whats Love Got To Do With It, should be the first movie to watch yes....Tina herself said she has never seen it because she lived it already.

I highly recommend the flim, it's one of my favorite films of all time. I would have never understood her without the seeing it when i was little.

Ike & Tina had a great discography, great showmanship but a horrible marriage.

And yes their story was "Disney-ized".

1.) Ike & Tina did have a volatile marriage.
2.) Ike never attempted rape on Tina (both of them denied it)
3.) Ike & Tina only had one child.
4.) Tina said she married Ike because Ike was being hounded by his ex-wife for child support payments.

Caught the "Tina Turner: Live in Amsterdam" as part of the American Revolutionaries: Rock N Soul series that ran on Ovation TV.

The woman was well over 50 when this was done and with a substantial band and 3 dancers she slayed any of the current slew of wannabe "diva" types you'd care to name. You know, the ones that pretty much have a Busby Berkeley troupe onstage to divert your attention away from the fact that the "star" is pretty boring.

Some things that stood out...

A) She can sing. And does sing even while dancing/running around.
B) Decent material to work with
C) Has a natural (not manufactured) image & charisma.

How about a lil Sade trivia...I Dont Want To Fight was originally sent to Sade b its songwriter. Since Sade only work on music they write, Sade Adu suggested it to her friend, Tina Turner. The rest is history...this also explains why the song was not nominated for an Oscar (since only songs written for films have been eligible since the mid 80's, after the horrid Take My Breath Away song won and industry insiders complained loud enough about the song having no "movie" creed).

Talk about "over 50," I saw her LAST year and she might have passed of some of the moves to her dancers, but Tina still pulled plenty of them off and was as hot as ever! I had my mouth open watching her navigate the stairs and that crane thing (whatever you call it) in the highest heels! She put on a show that many 30 year olds couldn't have done. I am absolutely in AWE of this woman! (I like a lot of her music, but the one that moves me is "Private Dancer.")

Other than her 80's solo stuff, I really wasn't familiar with her earlier catalog until I saw "What's Love Got To Do With It". I enjoyed the music so much that it made me reach back and listen to all of that Ike & Tina stuff. First of all, I was amazed at how massive their catalog was (and there are still many songs that have not been issued on CD). Some of it is just okay. But, there are some songs that I think are essential listening! I know she now prides herself in being mostly a Rock singer but I think she is one of the best Soul singers ever.
