The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - NO exclaim YOU exclaim DIDN'T exclaim faint Oh my god, you have no idea how this song can make me totally weep cry This is one of the most beatiful songs ever created. The imagery created in each lyric are grand, creationistic, galactical and eternal in nature. This song really underscores how powerful a song can be sung without over the top Beyonceisms or Mariahness. Simply and stunningly sung straight from the heart with this most glorious orchestration. I am shining like the sun right now sun

This song also has this effect on me. One of the reasons First Take is my favorite Roberta Flack album.

Porque te vas is a friggin' classic! I included it in my homemade anthology of latin pop classics...

I'm not mad about the rest of the songs, but anyway I have them all included in other homemade compilations (70's pop/rock hits, European classics, etc),and of course I have Rubber Soul...(like everybody else, I guess...)

oh, and I tried to like Radar Love six years ago but I just couldn't...there's someone wrong with this song...

?

Do you mean if there's an earlier version of the song? Umm, no, I'm 99% sure that the Cria Cuervos version is the first one ever recorded...

Yeah, I heard it for the first time during the late 90's (the early years of p2p lol), when I made a homemade 4-Disc anthology of latin hits (spanish and south-american) lol One of my favorites wink

Except the singer.

And Dutch songs do not often get it right, I suppose. So that's true.

Except Shocking Blue's Venus, of course.

At the age of 7 I moved with my family (who are from Sweden) from Switzerland to a small country town in Australia. It was difficult. I clung onto this music, it was a link to my identity, my origins, my family. It's a purely sentimental selection of songs I loved from my parents very small music collection. Not cool or by any means fashionable, just home and comfort to me.

    Amapola – Spotnicks (1963)
From my parents cassette "20 Golden Greats"
http://rateyourmusic.com/...en_greats/ (a German compilation of songs that were hits in Europe during my early childhood)
My mum said she heard the Spotnicks playing this song live from across a lake once when she and her girlfriends took a trip south to Germany.

    Norwegian Wood – Beatles (1965)
We had the Rubber Soul album. The rainbow printed around the record's label used to mesmorise me as it went around and around and around. At the age of 5 I fancied Paul.

Education Sentimentale – Maxime LeForestier (1971)
My parents had this song on a CD, so it was a bit later that I heard this, when I was in my teens. My mum was learning french and her teacher introduced her to LeForestier.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Roberta Flack (1972)
This song was on the B-side of our Killing Me Soflty single.

Radar Love – Golden Earring (1973)
also from "20 Golden Greats" I used to think this song was soo COOOOOL lol
Now I find out every rock cover band around did this one, and to think they were a Dutch band razz

Porque Te Vas – Jeanette (1974)
We had this on a 7" - my mum had been to see this film
Cría cuervos (English: Raise Ravens) 1976 Spanish film directed by Carlos Saura. The film is an allegoric drama about an eight year old girl dealing with loss
http://en.wikipedia.org/w...Da_Cuervos this was my FAVOURITE song as a kid.

Honey Honey (Swedish Version) – ABBA (1974)
We had the WaterLoo cassette, with the English version of this song on it. ABBA were like the most popular band in Australia ever, but we missed the mania by a couple of years, having arrived here in 1978. My friends had ABBA socks and wanted to know if I had met them

I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You – The Alan Parsons Project (1977)
We had the Best of Alan Parsons cassette and I played it over and over, I used to like to think this song reminded me of Prince redface

    Toccata – Sky (1980)
Me and my sister and the 3 kids from next door used to race around the lounge room jumping on top of furniture to this one until we were flushed and sweaty geek

    Ella, elle l'a – France Gall (1987)
This song was a homage to Ella Fitzgerald.
My mum used to wear a white shirt with the collar popped, white pants and a chain for a belt. Le Fashion! She used to think she was Joan Armatrading - I think of this when I listen to this song.

* I played this selection to my folks over the weekend, and they pointed out my glaring omission of Roger Whittaker's version of Moon Shadow. I have looked and looked and not been able to find that version anywhere, it must be too obscure sad

The "Porque Te Vas" song...kids in Spanish class used to sing that all the time after we saw it on some movie. They used to joke about finding the soundtrack, lol. Never thought I would actually come across that song again.

It sounds like you had quite a cool musical upbringing! I particularly liked "Toccata", "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You", "Amapola", "Porque Te Vas" and the stunning "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face". I love that there are so many languages represented! I could envision myself jumping around the house to a lot of these when I was young, too. lol

This may seem odd, but I envy the sound of this mix. No matter how lighthearted I try to make my mixes sound, they come out rather dark and heavy. I figure that must say something about me. neutral Your mix, on the other hand, even though it reflects times of anx in your life, sounds really free, buoyant, childlike -- as it should. I think that's awesome.

Anyway, things that stand out...

Amapola - Sounds like a surf/Mariachi mashup somehow. lol Unlikely and very fun start. There's a song along the same line that I'm considering putting on my own standby mix.

Norweigan Wood - I didn't discover the Beatles until high school. I wish I had more familiarity with their work as a kid. There's something so innocent about their music, and yet so smart... I think it would have cued me to explore music much earlier, and by now my tastes and knowledge might be much broader. This track is a Beatles favorite of mine. (And Paul was the cute one. shhh)

Education Sentimentale - I had to get my 9-year-old to translate for me. redface She would only tell me small pieces... and test me to see what gaps I could fill in. She laughed at me more than once. mad I WILL learn it all, however!

First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Bottomless cheese, and yet I will ALWAYS love this song! Roberta's voice, that bass... touched I can never listen to this just once. It's been somewhat of a struggle to divorce this song in my mind from the horrid film Play Misty for Me, though. It's like a beautiful, delicate woman married to some hulking brute. disbelief

Radar Love - hmmm I can't figure out if I know this one or not. Sounds vaguely familiar, but... Anyway, I love the HUGENESS of this.

Porque Te Vas - Love it! And, yep, the sound totally belies the sad lyrics. I'd heard of neither the song nor the movie. I'm suddenly intrigued by both. Have you seen the movie? It sounds awfully sad.

Toccata - feeling ill It's not my favorite Bach piece to begin with, but I generally HATE contemporary fusion-y reworkings of classical/baroque. Like putting vinyl siding on Notre Dame de Paris. disbelief

Ella Elle L'a - I don't altogether dislike it, but I can see the problem sextonseven has with it. This reminds me of Joni Mitchell's sound at the time -- sort of that canned mid-80s synthesizia. (...Yeah, I made up that word. redface)

Thanks for this, Charlotte! This was a really fun, eclectic ride. clapping
