The whole event was one big bore-fest. Ain't like the days of Dr.J, Bird, 'Nique, Jordan, Isiah, Magic, etc.

Her vocals tend to suffer at larger venues. shrug

I'm just glad the curls are back though. It looks a whole lot better on her than the straight hair.

It's almost like she sings harder in a larger room like there is no microphone for her. Do you know what I mean?

A lot of people were talking about Alicia, but I didn't notice any changes in her voice. Ushers lipsynched performance was pretty sloppy.

Awww, I always thought she had more potential than most of the younglings out there. How comes so many artists dont have the staying power of singers twice their age? Must be something in the water.

I think it's because she just has great difficulties singing properly when the monitoring isn't off the best possible kind. At large venues there are all kinds of reflections and standing especially in the middle of a huge venue it's hard. It can be definitely hellish out there if you've ever stood at such a position. Some other vocalists can handle it a bit better, but as far as I know, Alicia Keys didn't really do many gigs prior to becoming a star.

The "shouty" or "raspy" vocals that she seems to resort to in such situations isn't necessarily the best possible solution to it. It might sound better at the location to herself, but on TV it doesn't really work. I liked her previous album, because she just let go and didn't care whether it was perfectly on pitch or not.

Now, on the other hand, I have no idea what's going on here. lol

(same link: http://www.youtube.com/wa...F9xXb8YxGA if player doesn't work)

Guess they were going for some modulations at the end, but it's admittedly just a mess. It's almost like, you know, free jazz.
