but he had alot of buzz among hip hop heads before he hooked up with The Gremlin. His stuff was way better when he was collaborating with 9th Wonder imo

But just because you are "Underground" doesnt make you better, people always get this notion that there is some well of GOLD underground, sorry, but there is alot of shit underground, just as much shit that is on labels. You can still be relevant and "speak" truth to power and have a deal. Ryan Adams is signed to "lost highway" which technically is "indie" but its owned by a MAJOR (which most are) and he has never lost a step from the days when he had no deal. If you suddenly lose things when you sign that contract, than you are not an artist by trade, you are a hired hand that will do whatever is needed from you so your bosses get paid and your label gets paid. Signing a contract does not "take things away" if it does, then you never really had it to begin with, if its lost that easy

Now before anyone says that i always say dont sign with labels, well thats true, but its not because you will lose your talent or flow or whatever, its because you will be reduced to a schedule and a salary dictated by others, and you will be a slave to billboard charts and soundscan, so thats why i say DONT SIGN, not because you lose your fucking flow when you sign, thats just not a very intelligent analogy

lastdecember you have to realize that we are talking about hip-hop. there is a big difference between mainstream and underground in the genre.

i agree that being "underground" isnt always a seal of approval but it comes pretty close by todays standards.

Labels are not needed now, not even for distribution, you can go the label route for the promo machine, but if sacrifice its because you werent real to begin with.

well let her know because she rapped on her first record, had 2 mix tapes before her full albums. She also plays four instruments, and does her own hiphop beats and production.

Lets not forget that

50cent,JayZ,Nas,LilWayne,Dre,Eminem were all underground and with the exception of Jay and 50 who were pretty much fakes from day one, the others are still pretty much doing the same shit at their labels, plus they leak their own albums which is what the underground is regardless of genre, they all do it in every genre, more in rock and metal

just because you "rap" doesnt mean you should be classified as "hip-hop". the songs i heard from her were wack ass rnb bullshit and based on my first impression i can guess that her rhymes are mad weak.

and regarding who you consider "underground"

Lil Wayne went platinum on his debut album

. Jayz has been featured alongside established artists well before he dropped a solo lp which helped him reach platinum status with his debut.

Nas dropped the single "halftime" and gained enough recognition to score a deal with columbia. anything he lacked in record sales was compensated for by rave reviews in various media outlets(5 mics in the source) and respect as one of the best mc's to ever bless the mic. it didnt take him long to score a sizeable hit with lauryn hill two years down the line.

that is not underground

that is mainstream.
