What is the rule concerning this album? If I remember correctly, it was released in the U.K. in 1989, but in the states in 1990. Are U.K. orgers not allowed to include it in their lists? hmmm

i'm having a hard time coming up with ways to do the song list.... i'm thinking that for myself, i'm going to limit it to 3 songs per album, 6 tracks overall per artists, and keep it to singles only... otherwise i think my list will be unmanageable, heh...

People, by today's standards most of those albums are clearly dated or are just disposable (well, most of them were already disposable in the 90's, get over it); my advice? sold them at a second-hand store and get some fresh cash... no offence...

Like HIS current musical taste.

Even if some of these are dated, they were valid to people then and I suppose still are to the peeps who liked him. It's just another case of having a different opinion.

the big difference here being people who actually listened to these albums
and cherished them because they loved the music and because of the ways in
which this music is connected to their memories of past times. plus, and i
am sorry but i have to quote prince here "a good song never dies".

i guess these albums would be disposable or dated to someone who only got
them because they wanted to be part of something that they didn't really
relate to in the first place.

well first up i just went through all the 90s albums that
i like.

after that i looked at which ones meant the most to me
and had been playing regularly since their release.

then i graded them all from 6 to 10. the ones that got
an equal grade, i looked at the tracklist attentively,
and put them in order from most to least brillant ones.

after that it was just a matter of putting them on the
list from 1 to 100.

albums that were pretty much equal on all points, i've
simply looked at which ones 'felt' best overall when
you look at the time they were released and the cool
memories attached to them etc etc.

having said that, i don't think i could have made any
list of more than 100 albums, let alone 200 albums,
like you did. this one was already a bitch.

the songs list is gonna be even harder lol

the other one doesn't list at all.

you should also look to see if you can download the gravediggaz album
somewhere. it's fantastic. i don't have it anymore, at least i don't
think i do. i should go through my cd stack in storage.

but i listened to it many, many times and the tunes are great. the
lyrics are good, strong and the music is weird and deep, especially
for a rap album.

Well, this is where my obsessive tagging comes in; I just
did a search on my drive for 1990 and all the albums (or
close to all albums) I have from that year pop up.

Then it was just the case of copying the titles and artists
in an Excel file.

Of course, cuz you can never be a total completist, I used
the Acclaimed Music list Ian sent me to see if there were
any oversights.

So mind you, I had 525 albums I started off with; around
a 100 came off the AM list. (grin) So whittling it down to 200
was easy, after I graded them, then judged them the same way
you did.

And now I got a list of a 100 albums I still need to get. (grin)

Let's see folks: terms like "today's standards" or "dated" may look completely subjective, but basically the story goes like this: by "dated" I mean that dozens of new "artists" and bands of the 90's jumped to the train of certain trends and styles from that era (grunge & "alternative", mainstream electronica, gangsta, etc.) with just one goal in mind: to copy what made those new styles fresh & cool and, hopefully, get some fame and success in the process. And they got fame and success, yeah, because of the taste of the public back then, but the artistic results, let's face it, were awful: heartless corruption of those trends and styles to the point of self-parody or cheese-sounding garbage. Bowie's Earthling is a great example: this lp was (and still is) dated and excessive, but I'll never say that the Fat of the land is mediocre or dated because it isn't: it's a landmark of the late 90's electronica, a groundbreaking album.

And my personal tastes have nothing to with this wink, in fact I believe I'm objective as hell in this matter; ex: I don't give a damn about Nirvana but I'll never say that they were not fresh or groundbreaking, because they were.

More examples: Garbage? umm, ok, why not. Concrete Blonde? Give me a break. Oasis? Certainly...Bush? nooooo; Korn? Yeah, Kid Rock???? are you fuckin' kiddin' me?

The same goes for the 80's: Madonna's first album: still fresh? yes; still relevant? yeah...Paula Abdul???? pfffff
And one example for the 00's decade: do you really think that Beyonce's albums will stand the test of time, in terms of relevance and popularity? NOOOOO. Still, that won't prevent old fans from buyin' tickets (or the new shitty album) of the aging superstar...just like there are folks and gals who still buy tickets for Celine Dion or Limp Bizkit...

Oh, but there's even more: even those groundbreaking artists and bands of the 90's released some major lemons after their short (in most cases) "golden era": I've recently sold all my Tori Amos albums after Under the pink and I'm glad I did: her first two albums and a homemade anthology is all I need...the same goes for the Oasis albums after Morning glory(Dig out your soul is great though lol) . Nostalgia? what's that???

Anyway, don't get me wrong people: in my opinion, there are dozens and dozens of 90's albums that still sound fresh and relevant, just as there are dozens of 80's albums that are still fresh and well-known...

But of course, you can dismiss this reply as slighty irritating bullshit (perhaps it is), because in the end, music (like any other form of art) is about opinion, personal tastes and similar subjectivity. And that's fine by me...

I have to admit that the 90s are kind of like a "black hole" to me. I didn't like much of anything that was on the radio or MTV, so my favorite albums and songs carried over from my favorite artists of the 80s, with a few exceptions. As such, my lists are gonna be pretty crappy and loaded with lots of items from my favorites. I'm hoping to use this poll to discover more great stuff- I've already listened to Dummy by Portishead and really liked it, and I want to track down Moon Safari by Air as well.

And that's all; those are the albums that I still consider worthy and 100% listenable after all this years. I repeat what I've said some threads before: 90's music, for good or ill, was full of hit-and-miss bands and artists that nowadays are, for all intents of purposes, completely forgotten by the mainstream public or just positively ignored by "serious" new listeners (Lush, Menswear, Placebo, etc.) The same can be said about the american post-grunge bands (Bush, Coal Chamber, Deftones, Silverchair, etc.) or the irritating hipsters of "90's intelligentsia" (if that thing ever existed): Saint Ettiene, The Divine Comedy, etc. barf

Also, albums that I L-O-V-E-D as a teenager are just worthless for me now, especially many of the "classic" aternative-rock LP's (PJ Harvey, Helmet, Weezer, Manic Street Preachers, Tori Amos, etc.) Perhaps they're just about "youth issues" (a concept that grows dated as soon as you are +20 years old), perhaps they're not as good as I thought (does anyone remember at this point any "classic" of YoLaTengo?), perhaps they're more boring than I remembered, but man, that kind of stale music just don't work for me anymore. If the bulk of 60's hippie music is dated, just as the bulk of 70's disco and the 90% of dance and metal of the 80's is almost unlistenable, then the 80% of 90's alt/rock is completely worthless and dated in my eyes.

Talking about 90's electronica, my fav artists, not surprisingly, are those which were concerned about crafting smart hooks, catchy choruses and clever melodies and not only about production values and/or off-the-wall beats and rhythms. The bulk of 90's electronic music is good for nostalgia at retro-clubs, but not much more...

More: though 90's Rap music was a far-cry from the golden age of the 80's, it was (and is) 1000 times better than the current Shit-Hop we are forced to hear on the radio. I gotta admit that The Chronic was a very consistent record, but at the same time it signaled the beginning of the end for rap music in terms of freshness and production values...Eminem was truly promising but, well, after '03...ooops...The same can be said about modern heavy-metal: look at Korn, NIN or Pantera: they were fresh, exciting innovators, but their style was quickly corrupted into that nu-metal garbage that hundreds of hipsters tried to copy with lame results (Limp Bizkit, Incubus, etc.)

In addition, the so-called "female singer/songwriter" genre of the 90's (Morrisette -or whatever it is spelled-, Imbruglia, Shery Crow, Meredith Brooks, Bullshit, etc, etc) almost made me lost my faith in mainstream female music during the second half of the 90's (at least Britney & Christina offered a generous dose of sheer enjoyment sorely missed in female pop since the 80's). Oh, and I don't give a damn about 90's R&B either: New Jack Sing was fun for a while but people like Maxwell, D'Angelo, Brandy, Babyface and others were way too bland. And Boyz II Men??? GIVE ME A BREAK. Nothing to say about 90's country either: it has survived as a crossover artifice, but the purity of the genre died after the 70's, that's for sure...

Finally, there are dozens of other artists not included in this list of 90's albums because, for my taste, only their greatest hits or compilation albums are worthy and enjoyable (ex: Jamiroquai, Spice Girls, TLC, En Vogue, Blur, Cranberries, Lenny Kravitz, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Mariah Carey, No Doubt and many, many more)
