Don Cornelius explaining why P Funk was never on Soul Train

He said this at the screening of the Soul Train documentary here in LA that my friend attended:
"A grown man in a jock strap? That shit ain't never going on Soul Train."

Then he was a fool for that reason. One person from a whole band in a diaper put him off? Pffft.

That's funny. LOL.

And all this time I thought Prince chose not to be on Soul Train during the 80s, but I guess he wasn't invited either. lol

No, not then either. I should have posted: late 70s-80s, lol. However, when he was enslaved by the system in the mid-90s he was a guest on the show. But Don didn't host Soul Train anymore then, so I guess it was alright. lol

Did Parliment ever make it on many television shows? I don't recall them being on many shows in the 70s and 80s.

I think you're thinking of his appearance on Solid Gold in '83.

That was Solid Gold. P never did ST until he did the appearances for the prince debut album, The Gold Experience.

Maybe Don thought it was a bit too much for daytime television. Remember, ST aired on many stations in the afternoon and he didn't think it was appropriate at the time.

Prince never performed on "Soul Train" until the mid 1990s after both the show and his own music had fallen off. I always found it very stupid that Prince made the rounds to every white show back in the day when he was a somebody but never went on "Soul Train" until he fell off.

I think you're thinking of his appearance on Solid Gold in '83.

4 June 1983 (Season 12, Episode 18)

According to IMDB he was on Soul Train 4 June 1983 (Season 12, Episode 18), which also had The Temptations and Anita Baker.

But he was also on Solid Gold w/ that song, because I have the video of it.

But Don did have the "watered down minus George" version of Funkadelic on in 81 (Calvin, Fuzzy and Grady).

They are wrong. The Tempations and Anita Baker were on there but prince wasn't. Here's a link to all their episodes that year....

Yeah, I know. I almost feel like that appearance should be for Solid Gold, but the Solid Gold part on IMDB is greatly under developed.

at that point, he was going on any show that would have him in the US and Europe. he had an axe to grind and was working overtime to promote some music that, at the time, may or may never be released. he did Acknowledge Me, after all. he was working it harder in 1993-1995 to build some buzz for new material than he ever had in his career.

I'm wondering that too. But if he never wore revealing outfits, he probably was a guest. I need those upcoming Soul Train DVD box sets. lol

Prince didn't acknowledge the black media/press untill he wrote "Slave" on his cheek.

Actually he was on in 1980 when per he performed "IWTBYL" and "WYWTMSB" just a couple weeks after his first ever TV appearance on American Bandstand (Jan. 26, 1980)
