Funkadelic---Lacking the Funk?? I know, I know... "What the hell?!"
However, after listening to quite a bit of Funkadelic on Grooveshark, I'm finding that their music lacks strong, thick beats. "One Nation Under a Groove" is the only song I've found that consistently keeps the funk for me. Other than that, I'm finding nothing. Am I just an idiot?? Do they have any straight, raw, FUNK?? Falling leaves will appear to them.. Like slow-motion rain..

Funkadelic is more rock oriented. Check out Parliament!! There you will find the funk!

"Sexy Dancer" - Prince. No, that isn't the only example, but it's a song that keeps the beat STRONG from start to finish. It's nice. Falling leaves will appear to them.. Like slow-motion rain..

Does Funkadelic have any straight raw funk? Is this a trick question? lol BTW,no you're not an idiot you might not know the score. If not anything else remember this....all these brothers learned from and/or at one time played with the father of the groove, the one, intricate rhythms, and thick beats..... lol If that don't say it all and u need more proof lend an ear 2 these..... Parliament is really where you want to be for the funk. Check out Motor Booty Affair for quite simply the craziest funk album ever. Parliament really were from another planet.
I do prefer Funkadelic and their tightest funk album was probably Lets Take It To The Stage but as other posters have noted it's not funk you're probably looking for.

Completely different bands but for straight raw funk Ohio Player's were pretty awesome and early Cameo. Tight nasty shake your ass funk.

...
Yeah, Funkadelic definitely had a loose, freer feel, Parliament was more about tight groove-- but I love these Funkadelic Grooves: Funkadelic - Cholly Funkadelic - Electric Spanking Of War Babies Standing on The Verge of Gettin It On Loose Booty Good To Your Earhole ... Funkadelic took the rhythms of Funkadelic and Sly Stone to different heights, Parliament was more of the James Brown/Meters sound.

Your definition of straight raw funk is more drum programmed verse chorus verse / instrumental type funk. Perhaps you should review Parliament because Funkadelic is a more rock band than funk oher than One Nation and (Not Just) Knee Deep. Ill add "Freak Of The Week" to that list. U should pay attention to these tracks: Parliament - Theme From The Black Hole Aqua Boogie (Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadooloop) Funkentelechy Dr. Funkenstein Agony Of DeFeet Rumpofsteelskin Motor Booty Affair Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

You're not alone with that view. Funkadelic was always a more of a "let's do all this crazy stuff" -type of an act with a heavy emphasis on rock guitars and even distorted keyboards. Especially the earlier records are quite far away from being straightforward funk records. Sometimes when I listen to them I do get the feel that the band is really overrated as some sort of defining act of funk, but sometimes it's just the type of stuff that I want to listen to anyway.

Mind you, most music of the 70s lacks thick beats. The methods used for recording drums were quite different from how things were done today. You'll find the same also applies to Sly & The Family Stone if you'll oneday choose to try that out.

Overrated? lol No way baby, no way. No one in R&B was doin what George and compnay was doin. He was pretty much the black Frank Zappa lol If not 4 George's theory to put The Parliaments "backing band" up front,if not 4 his way of conducting musical ideas to a band full of geniuses, we wouldn't have no Prince, no Rick James, no RHCP, no Living Colour, no Fishbone, no Roger & Zapp, no Slave, no Sun, George Duke wouldn't have written "Reach For It" and "Dukey Stick", Junie Morrison wouldnt've left Ohio Players and they'd be a different band, "The Chronic" would've sounded completley different, there wouldn't be no west coast hip-hop, no southern hip-hop, no me, no u, none of this. lol Ya ain't gotta be sorry. People felt that way about P-Funk and everything else that wasn't/isnt the norm but shit, where would we be now without it?? Now if it's strong thick beats you're after, check out the Stax Records catalouge. Where Motown's drummers Uriel Jones, Benny "Papa Zita" Benjamin, Eddie 'Bongo" Brown and Richard "Pistol" Allen pioneered "the groove", Stax's drummers Al Jackson and Willie Hall foundation was blues and were known for the strongest, thickest beats anywhere. I guess what I am trying to indicate there is how people especially still in the 90s used to relate to it. Funkadelic certainly has been revered for ages and critically acclaimed as well. Maybe people had heard only a best of -collection of Parliament / Funkadelic, seen some video footage or something, but they were always prone to repeat how great and cool Funkadelic was. I always just got the idea that most people had not really heard what the actual albums were like and what type of music they would actually contain. Back in the day when I myself got into funk etc. there were no p2p or spotify -type of things around. [Edited 1/22/10 12:14pm]

I can agree to a certain extent.
I prefer more structured grooves when it comes to funk/dance music. You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!
