mariah carey. her voice is deep and raspy.

Co-sign. Sometimes she does sing in a way that matches her speaking voice esp. using low register, but most of the times she keeps the singing tone high and light. You might be surprised by how deep and raspy her (casually) speaking voice can get.

If she sings in her speaking voice more often, she'd sound more like Mary J., would sound even more gritty than her judging by their speaking voices.

For a long time in the '70's and '80's, a guy named Shake Russell was the most popular performer in Houston. Kind of a Bob Dylan folkie.

I remember the first time I met him and he spoke. I thought he had laryngitis! It was the worst rasp I'd ever heard. I asked him if he was sick and he said no, this is the way he talks. But it didn't affect his singing.

He wasn't Pavorotti, but he had a good singing voice. I never figured out how he could, though.

Also, Mel Tillis - a country star from way back when - stuttered when he spoke but not when he sang.

Yeah, I noticed that when I was watching her reality TV show the other day. She almost sounds like a little girl.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I would say MJ, but people close to him said that his speaking voice is deeper than the high pitched voice we're used to hearing.

Christina Aguilera for me.

Her speaking voice is kind of high pitched and very girly, but her singing voice is another thing. I would never expect that big, soulful voice to come out of her.
"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

I think his singing voice is moving closer to his speaking voice now.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Back in the day you'd never imagine that the dude singing those falsettos would speak with such a raspy brooklyn tone. Now, it's less far fetched as his singing has changed.

Any of the British singers, especially Rod Stewart. They all sound so cool in the songs but when you hear them talk, they all sound so stuffy and proper.

Prince was another one that tripped me out. I've been a fan since the "I Wanna Be Your Lover" days and when I heard his regular speaking voice on the "Controversy" album, it sounded almost scary sounding.
Andy is a four letter word.
