As much as I admire and appreciate these old lists (because they ARE a testament to popular music at that time) and (believe me) me that was the BEST time in music...THIS is what I remember most about Jet Magazine! And, yes, I bought it at the grocery store every week!

I never noticed it until you mentioned it. I love this song. Leon Haywood was a funk genius to me. Anybody that can write this song and "She's A Bad Mama Jama" is a genius.

There were some wonderful jams out during that time! This was the era that I switched completely over to R&B radio. I was a disco lover and the pop stations had killed disco off. If you notice, a lot of those songs kinda have a leftover disco feel to them. That's what made me switch over to R&B radio and first get into funk.

A lot of those songs came out in 1979. The Whispers, MJ, Jermaine Jackson, Teddy Pendergrass all were from albums released in 79. So that is definitely the end of the Disco era. It's funny that Donna had her biggest album in 79.

Yeah, those came out in 1979 except for Jermaine Jackson's which was 1980 (although it was probably recorded in 1979). Vaughan Mason and Crew which is on the list was 1980 also and had a very disco feel to it. I think The Brothers Johnson did "Stomp" in 1980 also and Lipps, Inc. which was straight up disco was released in 1980. Disco's influence was definately still lingering which is what attracted me to R&B radio over pop radio which had almost completely gone to rock, new wave, and adult contemporary and most disco was hated on pop radio during that time (the "disco sucks" era).

As for Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" album, I remember getting that album for a Christmas present in 1979 and the album was still going on strong in full force when I got it. The disco record burning incident in the baseball field had happened earlier that summer. Just goes to show that disco wasn't as hated with all people as so many folks would like folks to think. Disco still lingered on pop radio for a few months after that incident, it didn't just end abruptly. It took a while for the racists to fully get the news that "disco sucks" and stop buying records by black artists that they had previously bought.

lol No I don't anymore. Jet hasn't changed over the years but music has. Back when it was mostly R&B I bought, Jet, Black Beat, and Right On!. When rap starting taking over I pretty muched stopped. Not that I didn't like rap back then but it just wasn't the same...to me anyways.

I can't believe all this was 30 years ago. It seems like only yesterday I was jamming to the likes of MJ OFF The Wall and The Gap band's Opps Upside Your Head. That's why MJ death hurt me so much he was part of that delicious period of growing up and black music in general was out of this world.

That's back when folks were throwin' down. Just look how many fast jams are on that list and the slow jams are great too. Now, compare that list to an R&B list of today. You would think that today's list was the classical chart instead of the R&B chart with all that not only slow, but dull bullshit all over it. And people say "you're just getting older". That's a bunch of bullshit. It's most of the younger generation that is ready to sit in some rocking chairs. Hell, we were shakin' ass and still would like to.

I wouldn't even call today's garbage R&B. Back in the day, cats could actually sing, write songs and play instruments.

That's correct...disco evolved into other forms like freestyle, synth pop, electrofunk, etc. In many cases, they simply started calling it "dance music" instead of disco.

In my neighborhood, we stopped using 'disco' @ 1982 and called it 'dance' instead.

I pretty much like all of those songs! lol except for maybe "Style" by Cameo (it sounds too much like their previous hit "Be Yourself") and I wasn't in love with the Nona Hendryx song.

"I Just Gotta Have You" by Kashif music In the summer of '83,I wore out his first album!!
