Thin line between love and hate. I think he loved much of Prince's music but hate Prince. If I had to choose an album that Rick would ever admit to hating, I'd say either Dirty Mind or ATWIAD because those are probably so far from Rick's personal music taste. I believe tho he was checkin' on everything else that Prince did and hating him the whole while. Jealousy be a terrible thang.

one of the things rick hated about prince was the way he treated people around him.on the fire it up tour he was not the most gracious guy you want to talk to. plus, keep in mind his street song album was successful without mtv and thats why they didnt want to play his music.

i know he had issues with Sister and a few other themes off dirty mind, which for that time, were more demented than rick's' freaky material. But the shit hit the fan with Purple Rain, especially after Prince and Mr.Huntsberry crashed his concert at Universal ampitheatre.however, even tho he didn't say it publicly, there are those who were close to james' who belives rick did admire his music, and while i've yet to hear it from him,Prince got to say the same thing back, cuz after all,all the real funketeers are like a family.

God rest his soul yup.. he hated Prince singing about screwing his sister.. Yeah, never mind that the song was very fictional. I also remember that Rick said that Princess was "out to lunch" for making a track like that.

vainandy said: I figured that comment would ruffle some feathers. Yeah, they left. But I know countless fans that were with him all the way back to the "I Wanna Be Your Lover" days that left also. No, his previous albums weren't all alike but they did sound like they were recorded in the current era of the time which was the 1980s. They had a current funk sound mixed with current new wave. They didn't sound like a throwback to the Beatles and the 1960s. I'm all for a retro sound nowadays since the music scene as a whole is a bunch of bullshit. But I'm not for a retro sound when the current music scene was still good. In other words, if a party is drizzling out, yes, by all means change things and save it. But if a party is going on strong, the last thing that's needed is a change to abruptly end it. . . . [Edited 12/25/09 16:50pm] Exactly. The synth-funk era should have lasted longer than it did.

It's not like Rick could talk. He wrote a song about wanting to fuck a 17 year old when he was in his mid 30's. Rick said she was "almost jailbait".

Rick James used some rock-elements in his music, but to call it punk-funk was mere namecalling. On Dirty Mind and Controversy Prince went a lot further with combining rock and new-wave elements with soul and funk. I always felt like Rick James was simply jealous of Prince, not only because of Princes succes (especially with Purple Rain), but also because Prince was simply a far better artist then him when it comes to incorporating 'white' and 'black' musical styles. And when it comes to the negative, simplistic comment by Vainandy about Prince turning into the Beatles: I see the steps he took with ATWIAD and Parade in a very positive light. Why should an afro-american artist limit himself to so called 'black' musical styles (soul, funk, R&B) when he feels the creative urge to make the music he wants? Its not a sell-out to the white market or something, because both ATWIAD amd Parade werent exactly 'commercial' albums. It just a matter of an artist (in this case a black one) expanding his musical horizons, just like Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder and George Clinton did before him. MEMO: Around The World In A Day was a lot more like a Wendy & Lisa album than a Prince album. There I said it!

rick was already successful by the time dirty mind came out. rick was expressing his concern about were music was going at the time dirty mind came. he was hopeing that artist wont have to appear half ass naked just to sell a record.

yeah,I definitely think Rick had problems with 'Dirty Mind'.He was quoted at the time...
"You can't take Prince's music seriously. He does songs about oral sex and incest". I also think that Rick disliked many of Prince's "pop" songs,he probably felt that Prince was selling out and not being loyal to the funk... "He doesn't want to be black"

Harlepolis said: WaterInYourBath said: Rick James never respected Prince as a man. He shows this during an extra interview for his episode on "Chappelle Show" that is on Chappelle's Season 2 DVD box set. Considering this, I think he resented everything regarding Prince, including all of his music. But if I had to choose, I would say Rick disliked the 1999 era the most, since that's when Prince became a bit more popular than him due to MTV. That MTV episode was a baaaaad a scene Rick was right about MTV being racist. They didn't want to play Prince NOR MJ because it was a "rock station", but when Warner Bros and Epic threatened to pull of their rock artists videos from the station, they finally agreed to play Prince/MJ videos. The downfall of it though was, Rick caught the end of the short stick. I always thought it was a terrible injustice that MTV didn't play Rick's "Super Freak" video.I can understand his frustration. Oddly enough, the only time Rick appeared on MTV was when he was in Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time" video.

Exactly! We have to remember that,in those days,Prince could be a real asshole. He would ignore other celebrities at awards shows, and when Rick's mother asked Prince for his autograph,he rudely ignored her You NEVER disrespect somebody's mother.I can understand why Rick was pissed.

Why does R&B gets a very bad rap around here? I don't get it. Every GENRE out there is derived directly or indirectly to R&B,,,,if people realize this, they'll realize how silly and pointless their music snobbery is. Great post! I agree with everything you said.

I keep hearing about how Prince kicked Rick James' ass all over the place when they toured together but I don't believe it and I won't believe it until I see it for myself! As a matter of fact, I think this is just another one of Prince's self-started myths! There, I said it and meant it! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Well, there we have it. I doubt Rick would have found half as much to complain about if it wasn't for that...
