Stop X Factor shit going to number. Download Rage Against The Machine NOW. Doesn't matter if you hate the song, it's the principle that counts. Read this:

Sigh.
Does anyone else here (or anywhere) see the irony in people being told to download a song that contains the refrain 'fuck you I wont do what you tell me'? The people behind this campaign (and it's these people I'm taking aim at not you MattyJam) are just as gulity of encouraging sheep like behaviour as Simon Cowell and co. Anyone wanna buy a singing Che Guevara doll? It's been too long since you've had your ass kicked properly:

I don't see it that way.
Maybe I'm naive, but I like the idea of "socking it to the man". Maybe I've just watched School of Rock one too many times.

I see a lot of people thinking they're clever by saying "Well RATM and XFactor are both on Sony Music, so no-one is sticking it to anyone" and other such stuff.
For me I can't stand the fact that Simon Cowell manipulates and uses the UK public and even his own contestants with his despicable TV shows, promising people stardom instead of encouraging real talent and musicianship. Does anybody remember who won X Factor last year or the year before? Thought not. The UK public is sick of this shit, so we're rallying behind a song by a REAL band who wrote the song themselves and played all the instruments on it and actually STAND for something.....a far better alternative than some muppet who's having all the strings pulled by his puppetmasters, singing a Hannah-fucking-Montana song and will be completely forgotten about in a few months time. I bought "Killing In The Name" from Play.com for 65p to support the campaign even though I already own all of RATM's albums. I might buy it again actually on a different site. |

Well your first sentence is entirely true. I don't think anyone is being 'clever per se. Facts are facts. SONY in a win/win situation, Cowell a major shareholder, he won't really give a fuck. 20million, a third of the UK population watched the Xfactor final, so i'm unsure whether everybody in the UK is sick of that shit. I'd guess a lot aren't with those viewing figures. RATM were only picked in this campaign because of their bandname, Xfactor the machine to rage against. nothing more or less to it than that. I'm sure by now all the Joe fans have re-doubled their efforts in a counter strike against RATM. The whole thing is quite ludicrous.

The Pet Shop Boys have a new EP (which I think will get counted as a single since it seems to be sold that way). Honestly, a Facebook group saying the same thing (but replacing Rage with the Pet Shop Boys) came out as soon as the "Christmas" EP was announced. I'm wondering if the PSB group (a fan group, not created by PSB but apparently acknowledged by their Facebook group) came first.

At the end of the day, Sony would benefit, so who knows where this came from. If this movement gets people to buy music (which they might already own, BTW), who is the real winner. Honestly, what is there to be so worked up about? Rage Against the Machine, with their politics, probably find this laughable considering their agenda is a hellvu a lot deeper and more important than Simon Cowell.

Ooh! I didn't know this - I just really like that PSB Christmas E.P. I wonder if other countries stress as much about the Christmas #1 single, as much as the U.K. does?

Actually both Zack De La Rocha and Tom Morello publically support the campaign and Tom has said he'll give the profits made to charity. Talking about what record labels make the money from it etc is looking too far into it and missing the point. Some people don't want ANOTHER bland, soulless number Xmas #1 by an "artist" who is nothing more than a puppet from a incredibly dull singing show and will be forgotten about in a few months time. That's it. X Factor(y) is a huge corporate show with millions going into it. There's no way your average artist can get a shot at having a #1 when every year, they hype up this glorified karaoke nonsense endlessly and then the show ends conveniently 2 weeks before Christmas, when clearly people that don't particularly care about music will buy the winner's song, and children who's relatives give them random amounts of cash for Xmas will get suckered in by the hype and the constant blast of the X factor machine and go and buy it. And as for buying things twice, the people I know who are the MOST obsessed with X Factor are my young teen and pre-teen nieces, most of whom also love Hannah Montana etc and probably bought "The Climb" already anyway. It's the Twilight crowd, the Disney crowd. Once they get a bit older, they see through that kind of garbage and find some real music to listen to. And forgetting about all of that for a second....."Killing In The Name" is a great song, and "The Climb" is a schmaltzy dull Disney power ballad. If I have a choice over each of the songs, a dislike for boring fucking reality shows with uninteresting contestants who can wail other people's song in pitch but can't do anything else (any of them write their own songs? Play any instruments? And if they could, would they be allowed to? Do they have any creative control or get a say at all in how their career goes? No, no, no and no. - then of course I am going to support the RATM campaign. |

Rage Against The Machine were playing their now "current" hit live on a BBC morning radio show this morning. They had apparently promised to do a "clean" version of the end part....
In the build-up part Zack DeLaRocha stuck to just doing "..I won't do what you tell me" but when the band came in he started to scream "FUCK you I won't do what you tell me!" just like in the original... Apparently this was too much for the folks at BBC who cut the sound off after four F-words. I love the irony that they were being told by the BBC "Please don't swear" in a song with the lyrics "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me". They did an interview discussing the Facebook campaign around the song and here's the interview preceding the performance and the song (at least what was aired of it): [Edited 12/17/09 10:29am]

Well, I managed to listen to about two minutes of that interview.
What a bunch of self-important, pretentious tossers. I had no intention of buying the X-Factor winner's song beforehand, but I've made-up my mind now to buy it.

RATM didn't start this campaign so perhaps your anger is a little misplaced.
The fact remains that "Killing In The Name" is a legendary song by one of the best rock bands of all time, and the other song is a very dull schmaltzy power ballad written for Hannah Montana. One is a song made popular by the world on it's own merits and is about racism and corrupt police officers. It's a song that means something and makes a difference. It empowers people to fight for social change. The other has been chosen by some oppressive suit in an office, chosen for the winner of a horribly manipulative TV show aimed at people who actually don't give a shit about music, a show that actively DISCOURAGES artist creativity by not allowing it's artists any creative freedom, by a less-than-1-dimensional artist (like 90% of the people that go on those shows) who will be forgotten before the next season of the show even starts. |

Maybe they didn't start it - but they're definitely riding the wave. Militant said: The fact remains that "Killing In The Name" is a legendary song by one of the best rock bands of all time, and the other song is a very dull schmaltzy power ballad written for Hannah Montana.
The RATM song was chosen simply because it's the antithesis of a schmaltzy power ballad; i.e. noise. It's just fucking noise. Militant said: One is a song made popular by the world on it's own merits and is about racism and corrupt police officers. It's a song that means something and makes a difference. It empowers me to change the station when it comes on the radio. I don't actually like either song; they're both two extremes of the spectrum. However, Joe Mc.Elderry, Simon Cowell and the X-Factor judges have never pretentiously claimed that they're creating art - they're creating pop. Militant said: The other has been chosen by some oppressive suit in an office, chosen for the winner of a horribly manipulative TV show aimed at people who actually don't give a shit about music, a show that actively DISCOURAGES artist creativity by not allowing it's artists any creative freedom, by a less-than-1-dimensional artist (like 90% of the people that go on those shows) who will be forgotten before the next season of the show even starts.
If appearing on TV talent shows was the only route to radio airplay, I'd agree with you - but it obviously isn't the case. Simon Cowell doesn't force the contestants to apply; Simon Cowell isn't forcing the audiences to watch and vote; Simon Cowell isn't campaigning for record buyers to buy the winner's song... It is annoying that the climax of The X-Factor each year, seems timed to garner the Christmas #1 single. That's what most people are bothered about - not the fact that it's manufactured pop. It just makes the tradition of the Christmas #1 a boring anti-climax. I'd really have no issue with the RATM single being #1, if they weren't so gleefully, transparently (and most hypocritically) capitalising on the sheep-like behaviour of kids whom don't understand that you don't put-out a fire by pouring gasoline on it.

whatever happened to just liking what you like, and buying what you want to buy? and if it's a Christmas #1...why not make it a Christmas song that makes it? George Michael's "December Song" for instance.
