You obviously have not heard the last two experiemntal albums...tweak her sound to "sound like eveybody else"????? What are you kidding me? Amerykan Promise? The Healer? The Cell? That Hump? I Want You? Me? Annie? What??!?!?!? Got to be kidding me...seriously.

She tweaked her sound to be more funky, more out there and really set herself apart from the Jill Scott Maxwell and Dwele's. After these last two I would'nt almost even consider her a Neo Soul artist.

I'm not sure if some people on here know enough to be typing in this thread.

Yes, I have head those albums that you speak of and they don't move me as much as her debut. Yes, she has indeed tweaked her sound. Her sound has become WAAAAY over the top. To the point where it has started to sound unfocused and just like everything thing else out there.

LOL, I can tell you haven't listened just by this comment. Sounds NOTHING like what everyone else is doing. Actually the general concensus from her long time fans was that the album was too weird. Keep listening to your Janet Jackson and MAriah Carey dude.

One thing I really wish she would do is a rap song. She could probably do a whole album but I'd take a song or two.

My taste in music is allot wider than most. I listen to everything that is out there. In my opinion, her new stuff, just does not move me. It sounds unfocused with no direction. This is what I mean when I say that her music sounds like everything else out there. Most of today's R&B as well as "Neo-Soul",(with the exception of Maxwell), is beginning to sound the same. If you're a fan of her's then good for you. In your eyes, she cannot do any wrong. I'm just not a fan of her current material.

I share shorttrini opinion. Erykah kinda has gotten in a rut like so many artist, their music material was fresh, different at the begining but after the 1st, 2nd, or maybe 3rd Cd, there's nothing different or new. At that, I wouldn't considered Ms. Badyu as one of the greats anyway, a talented good performer/musician. I'm willing to stick around and see if Badyu can regain her focus and be a bit more musically adventurous. smile

No, I don't. I'm not saying she doesn't have talent because she does, but she will never be "one of the greats".

What jackieblue said. and she kept everyone on their feet cause she demanded it. lol

I did like Angie's the best too though...class act. I must confess to thinking she was Jennifer Hudson when she first walked out...i had forwarded past the nightmare that was fantasia and missed them say Angie's name.

How is Neosoul boring? Ol Girl has some chops. She tore it up on the Soul Train Chaka tribute. Graycap, why are you so emphatic?

It's boring because, just like other genre's, it starts to sound the same. As for that Soul Train performance, I had not idea what she was singing. Like I said, her debut was the great and the follow up was okay. After that, she decided to tweak her sound that really did not need tweaking. This is when she she decided to sound like everyone else and lost me.

When was the last time you listened to Badu?....lol

With every CD she brings out, I get them a few listens. My hope is that she does something new with each one, to MY disappointment, she doesn't. But, I am just speaking for me.

The problem with your statement is the her last two projects have been totally different from her previous work....It's one thing to say you don't like the music because we all have our musical likes and dislikes...But to say she's been the doing the same thing over her last few albums is kinda perplexing...

In short, it aint the case...

They may have been totally different from her previous work, but STILL not as good as her previous work, especially her debut. There was something special and fresh sounding about "Baduism", that has to me, has been missing from everything that she has released since. I feel the same about Jill's work as well. Jill Scotts' first CD was the bomb and parts of her second. Everything that they have put out has been stale.....The same ole same ole.

Ah...now this sounds more like it.....You just don't like the more avant garde direction Badu has gone in....See, I can respect that...But I just had a hard time understanding how you could say she has been doing the same old style of music...But it really comes down to you not "liking" her new style....

I for one am glad she has left the whole Neo Soul thing behind and gone to some more adventurous sounds...And for me at least, she still sounds musically strong doing it...

Is that what you call what she is doing? avant garde? I would only reserve such a term for Miles or Billie. None of the music that is being done today's performers can be classified in such terms. For one thing, they have not been around long enough to pay their dues. Erykah has become just like the rest of today's artist, talking but not saying very much.

Seriously ... I can't fathom how you can compare a tune like The Healer to "everything else that out there" with dark chanting and changing keys and sections, backwards pieces of music and chimes to be contemorary r&b. Really?

So you can compare her lastest work to an album by Ne-Yo or Rhianna? Two r&b artist that have produced "like everyone else" music. Her experimentation goes places that alot of soul artists never do.

Your thesis on the state of r&b is almost irrelivant to this conversation...it's like saying the album 1999 is just like Jay Z's The Blueprint...Apples and Oranges dude.....you are seriosuly not making sense to me and I cannot further entertain this. confuse

After listening to these records:

and watching her fantastic concerts too many times to name.. you can debate her albums all day if you wish, but if ANYONE dares to say her shows are not amongst the top notch... I've giving you the C'mon Son, gethtefuckouttaherewiththatbullshit.

I feel her best is yet to come artistically, but I'm going to bet on yes.

Nah...I think it comes down to Badu not following the original sound of her debut album...But it really doesn't matter why you dislike Badu's more recent music anyway..

My underlining point was the fact that you said she's been doing the same ol' thing for several years...Which wasn't the least vaild...

And whether you like the music or not (again, different strokes), that's totally different than saying she's been playing it safe or that she's been on the same musical formula...

That's all homie....Of course, no disrespect...
