Is that what you call what she is doing? avant garde? I would only reserve such a term for Miles or Billie. None of the music that is being done today's performers can be classified in such terms. For one thing, they have not been around long enough to pay their dues. Erykah has become just like the rest of today's artist, talking but not saying very much.

Nah...I think it comes down to Badu not following the original sound of her debut album...But it really doesn't matter why you dislike Badu's more recent music anyway..

My underlining point was the fact that you said she's been doing the same ol' thing for several years...Which wasn't the least vaild...

And whether you like the music or not (again, different strokes), that's totally different than saying she's been playing it safe or that she's been on the same musical formula...
That's all homie....Of course, no disrespect...

Yes, I do think she will be considered.

She has made progression with every release, eliciting a repsonse either positive or negative as consequence. That's a sign of greatness, certainly? To arouse a strong opinion based on artistic value, merit. Whether it's disdain or high praise?

And I'm not talking Rihanna, Bey, whichever pop starlet.. we know what time it is. lol

In Ms. Badu's case, she is considered. Like others have said, she's daring and entertaining to boot. Some of her work can be considered classic and there's soooo much more to come. There's so much to her work!

Idk, it's just relatable. All of it.

She stands head and shoulders above most of her contemporaries and when there's retrospect, will be considered on the greats.

My taste in music is allot wider than most. I listen to everything that is out there. In my opinion, her new stuff, just does not move me. It sounds unfocused with no direction. This is what I mean when I say that her music sounds like everything else out there. Most of today's R&B as well as "Neo-Soul",(with the exception of Maxwell), is beginning to sound the same. If you're a fan of her's then good for you. In your eyes, she cannot do any wrong. I'm just not a fan of her current material.

Seriously ... I can't fathom how you can compare a tune like The Healer to "everything else that out there" with dark chanting and changing keys and sections, backwards pieces of music and chimes to be contemorary r&b. Really?

So you can compare her lastest work to an album by Ne-Yo or Rhianna? Two r&b artist that have produced "like everyone else" music. Her experimentation goes places that alot of soul artists never do.

Your thesis on the state of r&b is almost irrelivant to this conversation...it's like saying the album 1999 is just like Jay Z's The Blueprint...Apples and Oranges dude.....you are seriosuly not making sense to me and I cannot further entertain this. confuse

I am not comparing her work to Ne-Yo or Rihanna. I never made that comparison between her and those artists. What I am saying is this. Her debut, said something to me, it sound was fresh and new. Up til that time, very few had a sound like her. Songs like, "Next Lifetime", "Other side of the game", and "Certainly", are masterpieces in my book. Why, because there was nothing out there at that time, that came close to sounding like those tunes. This was partly true with her follow-up, "Mamma's Gun". After that, is where she lost me. The material on the albums that followed sound unfocused, just like most of the music that is out there now. Regarding songs like the "Healer", there is nothing really new about the sound of it. Artist like "OutKast", "The Goodie Mob" and "Gnarls Barkely" have all ready attempted that sound. The lyrics are cool, but everything else about the song, is just o.k. You know, I am fan of Prince and MJ, and when they have gone off the deep end, I will be the first one to admit, that what they released was dog shit. For example, I thing Prince's "Come", is the worst thing that he has ever done. People have different musical taste and as much as I like Ms. Badu, I prefer her earlier material then her latest. I don't think that there is anything wrong with that.

Again...I don't think anyone would have any problem with you saying that you enjoy Badu's earlier work more because it fit the melodic sensibilities and traditional songwriting structure that you enjoy...But that's not what people took out of your statement earlier on....

It was this: "Most of today's R&B as well as "Neo-Soul",(with the exception of Maxwell), is beginning to sound the same..."

What does this^^^have to Badu?...And why would you mention this if you were not trying to make a connection to why you don't enjoy her current work?

I think that's why people are shaking their heads...Not the fact that you like "Next Lifetime" more than "The Healer".....

This statement works and is fine and dandy however turn to page 1 and you had stated that NOW her music "sounds like everything that is out" when clearly it does not. This is not just a passe statement but in this sense it can even be incorrect. I don't really know any r&b neo soul singer that has made an album like her last one who is in the commercial media.

Its good to have an opinion that you cannot tolerate her last album and that it's a piece of ish. That's fine and there is nothing wrong with that...it was your thought on the STATE OF R&B that you commented that made my head spin.

Unfocused...there is badly produced...then there is badly written..then there is unfinished when it comes to music. When you say her last album is unfocused as in catchy rhythms and hooks, yes i agree with you. Needless to say does that mean there is nothing to be said about "Master Teacher" or "The Cell" is another story. Maybe she will go back to being a bit more acessible, however I'm liking the weird Erykah trip now.

A legend or a great in an industry needs 20 years to get that title in my book. I love Badu's work. Mama's Gun is still the shining star to me. I hope for more coherent thought in song selections and song order on her next albums. By 2017, 20 years after her debut of Baduizm, several albums and tours later, we can discuss greatness.

I consider Badu to be a neo-soul singer, more than I would consider her to be an R&B singer. In the end, it is pointless for us to continue this discussion. So, let agree to disagree.

Actually, these days she's not even neo soul....She left that tag after Mama's Gun....

There's really nothing to agree to disagree about...lol...You made a flawed statement that some folks are pointing out...It aint even that serious homie...

I think the thing we can agree on however, is you like Badu's debut more than her other albums because Baduizm has more traditional song writing...And that I can understand...

I suggest you go back and read "Harelopis", response to me my post. She stated that she knew where I was coming from. She seems to be the only one to understand what I was saying. Here is a her response for you, just in case you missed it the first time:

I see where you coming from

While I hold her 1st 2 albums as some of the greatest from the past 20 years, I think she wasn't as enthusiastic when she made Worldwide Underground/AmErykahn Promise, partly because both albums were recorded while she was touring/having babies, idk.

HOWEVER, I credit those albums for stirring me into the direction of Sa-Ra Creative Partners who produced for her. Had it not been for her, I'd probablly would've never heard of those guys

I still think she's one of the most intersting/charismatic artists from our generation, if nothing else.

There is simply nothing NEW or earth shattering about her current music. This is why I said that it sounds just like everything else out there. In my opinion, there is nothing out there in R&B or Neo-Soul that has moved me in such a long time.

Her statement made sense though.

It was your comparison that irked me. And while Baduizm and Mama's Gun moved you I was a bit bored and wary of those albums. There wasnt anything funky or experiemntal on it. I mean it sounded a bit diffrent but not wildly or anything to make me want to listen closer and fall into a state of diffrent conciousness like New Amerykah...it was as if I stepped into another plane just like the first half of Rainbow Children or the last half of Electric Circus.

I guess we just like diffrent minds of music taste when it comes to the state of r&b because I have not heard anything that sounds quite like Erykah's last two albums.

You should probably just say you're not feeling it.

Or you can go and listen to those Prince remasters you kept talking about .....smile
