Dolly Parton

Watching a documentary on her at the moment. Interesting lady indeed. seems i'm developing some respect for her in my old age. Now country music aint my thing, and really hadn't taken much notice of her before. but she has a unique voice and she seems to be a decent musician.

A warm, genuine, caring person on top of that too.

Maybe i'm a fan. lol

What channel are you watching this on Marrk? I'm a big fan of Ms. Parton. She's doing some of her best work (music wise ) of her career. A very underrated songwriter and should be mentioned in the same breath as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson. Lets not talk about "Dollywood". cool

nod

Great business sense too. Elvis wanted to buy the rights of "I'll Always Love You" back in the 70s with a HUGE sum and she refused,,,,,best thing she ever done, 2 decades later the song scored millions when Whitney Houston covered it.

I'm in the UK. it was on BBC1. I might well go see her next time she plays here. Totally impressed.

I'm expanding my musical vocabulary, i need to listen to something else for a change. Why not Dolly? lol

I'm not a die-hard (meaning I don't know all her songs by heart) but I'm definitely a fan and have a lot of respect for her.

I recently saw her talk in an interview about how Elvis was supposed to record "I Will Always Love You" but when Elvis recorded a song, he automatically got 50% on royalties/rights.

She was not going for this.
I'm sure this took a lot of guts (especially for a woman in the biz) back then. Folk were probably like "You're nuts! It's ELVIS!" confused

I saw her last year for the first time and she was amazing. I usually do not like too much talking between songs, but she told some great stories. She still sounds and looks incredible.

Janet & Madonna could really learn a thing about stage presence from ole Dolly (and Bette Midler too). Instead of constantly relying on back up dancers to carry a show as they age, they could engage the audience with their stardom. It's funny because both of them fail horribly when it's just them singing (Madge w/ her guitar and Janet during her "Together Again" moment at this years AMA).

She is a wonderful songwriter and seems like a very fun witty gal.

Some of her best:

Dolly Parton - Coat of many colors
http://www.youtube.com/wa...1zJzr-kWsI

Dolly Parton - Jolene
http://www.youtube.com/wa...re=related

Dolly Parton - Just when i needed you most
http://www.youtube.com/wa...eeMDGq1FMI

Dolly Parton - Something Fishy
http://www.youtube.com/wa...gNm-HcnRl8

Dolly Parton - to know him is to love him
http://www.youtube.com/wa...qXvHXJvk44

And of course her masterpiece:
Dolly Parton - I Will Always Love You
http://www.youtube.com/wa...S-F4rfU4ns
(her version is so much more convincing then Whitney, to me - not trying to start a discussion)
I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.
