I saw bits and pieces of the Soul Train Awards as I was flipping through the channels looking for something good on (in which I had no luck). The only reason I even watched any of it, is because I knew the network has been playing the old episodes and I hoped maybe they would be showing some old clips in order to get some plugs in for the show. And I also wanted to see if Charlie Wilson was going to perform some Gap Band stuff or was he only going to be a sellout. Just as I thought, he was a sellout and when he did perform Gap Band songs, he let them be ruined by the presence of new "artists" on the stage with him and dancers which made it look like a corny Broadway musical.

From the parts I saw, the show was totally rediculous. I kept seeing people praising "Soul Train" that weren't even born during the show's heyday. That's fine and I understand that people can't help how young they may be. However, I'm willing to bet that 90% of them have not watched one single episode of "Soul Train" in it's entirety since Centric has been airing it or when WGN was airing the old episodes a few years ago. All I saw was a bunch of fake people who simply wanted to be on TV or an awards show in general, any awards show. It definately showed their fakeness when they would mention the bellbottoms and afros. Hell, the show was on for 30 years but their only knowledge of it is a few 1970s clips that have been showed over the years whenever the show's name comes up.

It's also rediculous to even had the awards show in the first place since the show doesn't even make new episodes (thank God). A tribute show would have been more appropriate. Why would a show give out awards for popular music in general? That's rediculous, that's what the Grammy's and AMA's are for. If it was going to be an awards show at all, they should have given out awards that apply to "Soul Train" itself which would make more sense since it's called the "Soul Train Music Awards". Hell, give out awards for songs that were popular with Soul Train's audience back then or for songs that were popular with the dancers. Give out awards to favorite dancers, most stylish dancers, wildest dancers, most comical dancer, etc. What I saw last night had absolutely nothing to do with Soul Train whatsoever and everything to do with having an excuse to promote more bullshit music from current so-called "artists".

(bolded part) I have to say that you make good points. Somehow, the show didn't bother me too much. I also thought they may have had the historic Soul Train line as part of the show, but that did not happen. There's 3 new owners now, that hey showed at the end of the show. Let's see what they will do with Soul Train, and if a new one will be created.

Loved the Motown medley, Raheem DeVaughn's performance and Chrisette Michelle's performance. I haven't seen Robin Thicke's performance lol

Well at least you liked Raheem's and Chrisette's performance. Raheem's song has so much truth to it. I like his voice, reminds me of Al Green.

I watched bits of it. I don't think Terence and Taraji should've hosted tho.

I'm glad they did. They brought some cute, light humor to the show. Also, it's not a crime for Black people to have humor on any show, as long as the entire show is not minstrel like the BET Awards.

I agree with Tim. I'm not a big fan of either of them, but I think a musical person should have hosted the show. I know Debra and BET were going for "big" names, but neither of them are known for being music acts.

lol

I guess not. If you think about it, there are not many people that are qualified to do it.

Brian McKnight is busy with his own shows and promoting his new album.
Usher is busy finishing his album and going through a divorce.
Monica is busy prepping her new album for release.
Who else?

Well LeToya Luckett was definitely available lol
Guess Ne-Yo was busy
Alicia Keys wasn't about to show up to this awards show
Umm Kanye, well maybe its best that he's taking some time off right now to get his mind right. lol
I'm sure Amerie was available

Oh, I don't want a new one to be created. When the show went off the air in 2006, it was long overdue and the show should have ended around the time when Don Cornelius left it in the early 1990s (actually it should have ended a few years before Don left). It's rediculous to have a dance show in a rhythmless era that has no music fast enough to dance to. If someone wants to do a show like that, that's fine but don't call it "Soul Train" and ruin the reputation of a good show (although it ruined it's own reputation in the 1990s and 2000s).

I'm glad it's off the air and they need to show as many old episodes as possible. Hell, one a day would be nice. I'd also like to see new television specials done with the show also but "Soul Train" is a thing of the past and any new specials regarding the show should be focused on the past only. A reunion of the old dancers would be great with them dancing to old songs from their era, not new ones. Old guests from the heyday of the show could perform also but they need to perform alone and not with current artists and they need to perform their hits that were popular on the show during it's heyday and not some sellout current songs they may have out at the time. A new show about an old show should be treated like a class reunion. Current artists should not even be mentioned in the same breath as "Soul Train". Hell, it's artists like them who make absolutely no ass shakable jams whatsover that was the downfall of "Soul Train" and any other dance show.

Centric was designed to compete with TV-One. They have yet to come up with any news programs or decent gospel programming. All they are running now is a bunch of old shows from VH1, MTV and BET. Come on, do we really need another run of the Salt-N-Pepa show?
