The news of his passing was on the front page of my newspaper this morning... I was...stunned.

1978 - I was 13 yrs. old. The 1st album I ever bought was Saturday Night Fever. I played it over and over again.

The Bee Gees got their name from the initials of their band, The Brothers Gibb... or The B.G.s. hence, The Bee Gees.

Maurice's voice was the lowest of the brothers, so what of their harmonies... I guess it's really over.

cry

Rest In Peace, Maurice.

peace

I've been listening to The Bee Gees all day long.I played their albums 'Main Course' (1975),'Children Of The World' (1976),'Saturday Night Fever' (1977) and 'Spirits Having Flown' (1979).If you don't have those albums in your collection, you should RUSH to the record store!

So very sad. I was out of town when I heard he was hospitalized--hoped he would be Ok. Next morning, wake up in the hotel, turn on the tube and he's passed. I felt so bad. Love the Bee Gees. Was fortunate enough to see them in their heyday in Detroit around Sat Nite Fever time! R.I.P. Maurice.

He had a beautiful angelic voice along with his brothers. I read his voice was the highest and most melodic. He will definitely be missed. If it wasn't for the BeeGees music (which was the core, heart and soul of Saturday Night Fever) this film would not have been successful. I hope the causes of Maurice's untimely passing will be resolved (which I heard his brothers are having investigated) because it sounds to me like pure negligence and stupidity on the part of those hospital clowns. R.I.P. Maurice. Your music will always live on!!!

I've read that he had gangrene all over his intestines, perhaps a result of his years of alcoholism. Who knows? Time will reveal the true nature of his death.

Been listening to the boys non-stop.
I still can't believe he's gone.

Okay, Bee Gees fans, there's one song I have but just a snippet of. It's great, it titled "Misunderstood". It has a soft mellow beat, and sounds like from the 80's. Not cheezy 80's but it has guitars and Fender piano. Anyone know what album that was off of? Or do I have a rarity?

Main chorus goes "Baby don't be so Misunderstood..."

I have an appearance on Arsenio Hall Show were they played "One" one of my other favorite Bee Gees songs.

You must have a demo version of a song that The Bee Gees produced for Dionne Warwick."Misunderstood" appears on her 1982 album 'Heartbreaker',which was produced by the brothers. It's a great album,by the way.

Also,Barry Gibb is currently working with Michael Jackson on new songs (probably for MJ's next CD).

Barry and Robin have vowed to continue the Bee Gees, so some good news. They've a ton of songs in the vaults in demo form (most featuring Mo) so hopefully some will be used on a new album.

They're the second biggest selling band EVER.

You can't get much more famous or popular than that.

Not one bit. It's been well reported since 1997 that the only band to have sold more than the Bee Gees is The Beatles. Elvis and Michael Jackson have sold more but they're solo artists.

The only band to have sold more what?...shirts with humongous collars?...tight fitting trousers...their own unique brand of talentlessness???

Each to their own, eh?

And to be fair, if you're not familiar with their catalogue i can't blame you for thinking that they only do "party" music. They don't. But that's radio for you.

I suggest you check out a few of their songs from the past two decades - what radio played (and more importantly didn't play) has greatly skewed the publics perception. Just think how rich Prince's catalog is compared to what the public has heard - the Bee Gees are no different. Here's a few to check out - just listed in the order I thought of them.

This Is Where I Came In (Maurice on John Lennon's guitar - a gift from John - acoustic guitar work as good as anything on the Truth)
For Whom the Bell Tolls (perhaps the best ballad the Bee Gees ever did)
Deja Vu
Omega Man
Blue Island
Decadance
Decadance (classic house mix)
You Win Again (this song was a HUGE international hit - most played song of the year - no US airplay)
Sacred Trust
Happy Ever After
Ghost Train (such a cool song)
Dimensions (as is this)
Technicolor Dreams (how many artists would have the guts to try something this different in 2001)
Walking on Air
When He's Gone
Alone
One
Paying the Price of Love
Paying the Price of Love (KC remix - the same KC who remixed several of Prince's songs)
Human Sacrifice
Haunted House

Some of the songs on this list would have been huge hits had radio given them a chance. And the post 70s catalog is strong enough that the Bee Gees would be higher that the 5th best selling act of all time as a result. On many of the songs I listed, Femi Jiya was engineer - same engineer Prince has now and had in the Batman era.

If I was gonna recommend just one Bee Gees album to somebody,I would suggest they pick up the 'Children Of The World' album (1976).It's their strongest, most consistent album yet.It features the hits "You Should Be Dancing" (later used in 'Saturday Night Fever'),"You Stepped Into My Life"(later covered by Melba Moore),the ballads "Love So Right" and "Love Me" (later covered by Yvonne Elliman). And the title track is a favorite of mine,as well.

I love the Children Of The World album. But for me Main Course is the one. Nights On Broadway, Jive Talkin', Fanny (be tender with my love) and Baby As You Turn Away make it my favourite.

Good list of songs, but where are all the Still Waters tracks? It was probably their best album in 20 years!

Oops,I forgot to mention that the 'COTW' album also includes the funky jam "Boogie Child",which received alot of airplay on R&B radio back in 1976.

Marvellous song. I was a bit dissapointed it didn't make their last Greatest Hits collection. It was a US no.12 pop hit, afterall.

Actually, thinking about it, there really ISN'T a bad song on Children Of The World. Lovers, Can't Keep A Good Man Down and Subway are on there, too. Damn, I'm gonna play the album now. biggrin
