It is even sadder because it signals the End of the group and everyone will now give them the respect that they always deserved. There is a whole generation that thinks the Bee Gees were only Saturday Night Fever but they fail to realize at one point they were turning out hits in competetion with the Beatles and in some cases beating them with creativity. But once again, people recognize U more when u are gone. Maurice Gibb - an underappreciated member of an underappreciated group. I own the complete works of just two artists - Prince and the Bee Gees. Nobody can touch their 3 part harmonies, which sadly will never be again. On their most recent album, This is Where I Came In, Maurice plays some phenominal acoustic guitar that any Prince fan would love, espcially on the title track. The official statement from the family reads:
"As of Sunday, January 12, at 1:00 AM, to our extended family, friends, and fans, with great sadness and sorrow we regretfully announce the passing of Maurice Gibb this morning. His love, enthusiasm, and energy for life remain an inspiration to all of us. We will all deeply miss him. In addition, we would like to thank the media and the Miami Beach Police Department for their kindness and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you." heartbroken, Alan

The Bee Gees were part of my first musical exposures as a child. They were magical and they had a special place in the history of Rock N' Roll. And whether you liked Disco or not, his voice along with his brothers brought you a warm feeling everytime you heard their songs.
Thank you Maurice. For those wonderful songs, your voice and all those memories. Remembering you fondly, Rest in Peace.

I never really understood the whole "guilty pleasure" image they had in the 80s. The Bee Gees are simply great songwriters with angelic harmonies. What's not to love. I'm only 21 and I grew up loving them from the day of their 1987 "comeback" and of course the title track to Grease etc. Only to discover they're much much more than a childhood love.
Maurice was also my favourite member - after the infamous spat on the Clive Anderson Show in the UK about 6 or 7 years ago. When Barry and Robin got up to leave in the middle of the interview, Maurice took the comments made as what they were - harmless jokes - and looked quite startled at the actions of his brothers. Poor guy had to apologise to Anderson and follow the other two out of the studio.

He had an intestinal blockage and suffered a heart attack during surgery. He regained consciousness but died shortly after.

The Bee Gees have always been one of my favorite groups. In fact,it was the 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack that really got me into music in the first place. This is truly the end of an era,and Maurice will be sorely missed.

My thoughts exactly. The Bee Gees were so much more than just 'Saturday Night Fever'.They have released consistently great music before and after the whole 'SNF' era.

That was so crushing to hear. I thought he was going to make it. I too grew up on The Bee Gees during the disco era, and that was a pivotal time for me in terms of the music that I was exposed to then (under the age of 10) and embrace today as my own. I also grew to appreciate what they've recorded before and after. At least they have been getting their props within the past few years including being inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. Just immensely talented lyrically, vocally, and musically; one of a kind, and easily on my all-time favorite list of groups, and for the SNF soundtrack.
R.I.P. Maurice and thanks for some classy, fun, and simply wonderful music. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!
