kitbradley said: No matter where she goes, Janet is going to be rather difficult to market. The woman is over 40 years old, with a fanbase in that same age group. Janet is doing music that may not appeal to people in that demographic and we don't buy as many CD's as the younger people do. Unfortunately, I don't know many young folk who want to hear/see a 40+ year old woman dancing and singing. And, because Janet is known for her entertainment factor rather than her singing ability, it's not like she can start recording more mature music and be taken seriously. It's going to be interesting to see the musical choices she's going to make for this next album.
the problem has been that she did actually show a progression of maturity in her material as she went along, up until All For You and ever since it's just been an obsession with "current" beats and staring at her own navel. or vagina, as the case may be... now that she says that she's getting actively involved in the creation of her music again, i hope she gets back on the track she was on before she stopped caring and de-railed her career.

It almost seems like once she lets other producers get on the album, it doesnt do as well as an album produced solely by J&T. Janet should go ahead & pull out all them Rhythm Nation outtakes and revamp them mofos w/ new vocals .. I'd LIVE

I don't understand why everyone disrespects DISCIPLINE as much as they do.
DISCIPLINE is a perfect Janet album - perfect sound, image, dance videos, overall style. Very cool. My favorite album from Janet. DISCIPLINE should have seen more sales success, but that doesn't take away from the album's contents. The album actually had great backing initially (around the time when the FEEDBACK single was "leaked"), but for some reason FEEDBACK didn't get to #1 on the pop charts (where it should've landed), and RWU disappeared quickly (another great song that easily could've landed #1). Janet is not finished by any means, and in fact remains among today's top talent. I find it funny that so many people's views are based on the success of record sales, as the record industry is out of control. I actually liked DAMITA JO much more than ALL 4 U, despite the difference in airplay.

DISCIPLINE is a perfect Janet album - perfect sound, image, dance videos, overall style. Very cool. My favorite album from Janet. Even as a longtime fan, I found her image rather repulsive, from the front cover photo to all the ones inside. I showed some people at work the booklet to Number Ones last week and while they complimented the other photos, they said the Discipline era photo "frightened" them. Maybe a little dramatic on their part, but certainly demonstrates how that does NOT translate into sales. I actually made the same comments about the cover/liner photos upon release.

Would they even really need a relationship with Janet to do that? Either way, it would be a great idea. I'm really surprised they didn't put out some of her live DVDs around the same time as "Number Ones"! The "RockWithU Tour" was featured practically all of these songs, didn't it?

At this point, remastered Control and Rhythm Nation CDs would be a very easy project to assemble and sell. Wait any longer and I'm not sure.

Janet's decline was much more abrupt and coincided with the SuperBowl fallout as well as the fact that she was approaching 40 - and in the notoriously ageist US radio market, these two turned her into persona non grata overnight. There are certainly tracks on the past 3 albums that I think would have been sizeable hits for her if 2004 had never happened. So much for outside the box, stretching, "innovation," using no samples...and all of that lol
Funny you should mention that, because I think Just a Little While is a great example of Janet trying something different - a sound she really hadn't explored before, with no sample and a new producer. For me, Jam & Lewis produced the more generic, boring material on Damita Jo. They are very capable of churning out standard stuff, and they proved it on that album and on 20 Y.O. It was no better - and actually worse - than some of the stuff that surrounded it. The best song on 20 Y.O. (Enjoy) was produced not by Jam & Lewis, but by their proteges. [Edited 11/20/09 17:07pm] Regardless of subjective opinions, one fact remains. Janet's albums sales have steadily declined with the diminshing number of Jam & Lewis produced tracks on each album, starting after Velvet Rope. By the last album, Discipline, you can see that the tracks were mismatched to her voice and style. In interveiws, Janet even admitted that the Damita Joe album was "rushed" based on pressure by the record company. Jam & Lewis' music is still relevant to this very day. Whomever thinks FlyteTyme has fallen off needs to check the hit list from the past 5 years including: Usher, Yolanda Adams, Heather Headley, Mary J. Blige and Chaka Khan's "Funk This" which won the Grammy for Best R&B album in 2008 and was the duo's concept to (re-)create a 21st century Rufus album. Most of their sampling, does not dominate the majority of tracks when used, yet allows them to add sonic textures, ear candy and a wider palette to the song. Check out the subtle James Brown sample on "That's the Way Love Goes" and see. Only on "R&B Junkie" and "All For You", do the samples dominate. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are STILL relevant and have a 25 year history writing and producing hits, which few producers in the industry can even boast. I'd be interested to see if producers like Rodney Jerkins or Kanye West or Jermaine Dupri are around and still generating hits two decades from now? Additionally, their in-house co-writers and producers which now include The Avila Brothers and Big Jim Wright and others are collectively more than capable of putting out an album for Janet with bumping tracks. As someone who writes, plays, produces and has met Jimmy & Terry, plus spent a day at Flytetyme (see my other post) and watched the creative process, Jam & Lewis are brilliant and still the winning formula for Janet. Rodney Jerkins is capable, but I am awaiting the subsequent album that returns her to an all FlyteTyme produced album and re-creates the magic. Check out the following FlyteTyme produced tracks which may not be played on radio and see the breadth, scope, and musical depth of Jam & Lewis' music: "Trust A Try", "Truth", "The Body That Loves You", When we Ooh", and "Moist". Great Rhythm & Blues songs that you won't cringe to listen to two decades from now.
