Usher Raymond, can he really sing?

The more I listen to the tone of Usher's voice, I am starting to take a second listen - and my ears are telling me he is grossly overrated. Melodically and phrases he sounds samey on every joint except when he uses his falsetto, which is not that strong.

Anyone else care to offer an opine?

he can sing. but thats when he sings proper songs, not the garbage that he comes out with these days.

i mean, whats his new song called? its called paper clips or something isn't it?

he sang MJ's "Gone too soon" at his memorial, now thats how Usher should be able to sing on his own songs.

Instead, he goes for the same fast talking shit, powered by tired tr808 kicks and snares with some typical supersaw synth in the back.

If you call that yelping like a wounded dog, singing, then yes....he can. He is no better than what is out there today.

I saw Usher in concert last year and he can sing. He covered Prince's Adore and Do Me Baby and did a good job. Usher always reminds me of Bobby Brown but Bobby can't sing for anything outside a studio.

I guess he can but his voice does absolutely nothing for me. Combined with his song choices he's barely a blip on my radar.

Nope...but the music is good, he can dance, and his body is tight like an X-Men superhero. Therefore he is worthy of fame and fortune.

I think he sounds good. As someone earlier mentioned, its his material that causes his voice to suck, in my opinion. He's got a voice, but not one so good that he could sing the phonebook. He's done covers of What's Going On and Never Too Much that I enjoy, and of course his first four studio albums I enjoyed a good deal.

He can definitely sing, no doubt, he just doesn't showcase his range much. I like Burn and U Don't Have To Call best in terms of voice.

I like Usher, I don't live for his current work, but even at a time when I hated him, he had talent. His voice is best used on songs that are well written. When you have shit to sing, it sounds like shit. You wouldn't want to hear an excellent voice belt out wack ass lyrics. His current problem is terrible writing, he attempts to mock the original treatments and that creates the horrid songs of today. His register is not on a Luther Vandross level, but still not karaoke quality. Recently a lot of good singers have been victimized by bad writing (Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston) Yes, the boy sure can dance, but he also kicks ass in ways Omarion and Chris Brown will never know. I'd still choose him over the newbies that we're stuck with.
