IMO it simply doesnt apply to what the threadstarter has brought up.
The idea that black persons who have died dont get the attention they deserve, is an idea mostly supported by black people who want to maintain their victim role. The ones complaining the most about racism, are the ones who first of all use it as an excuse to not take responsibility of their lives

What does your last statement (bolded) have to do with this thread? Is the threadstarter someone who complains about racism but does not take responsibility for their own life? Also,, the point of this thread is that all the people listed were not immediately known to have died and this is because it was not mentioned in mainstream media which is where most of us get our headlines from. So it begs the question; why were they not mentioned? Most people assume it was because they were black. Often black celebrity status is only celeb status to black people and not white people. That has nothing to do with a victim role and everything to do with inequality in the media and in hollywood which is very real. I think perhaps you have a limited view of what racism is and how it works. I appreciate that you responded though.

I mean you can't trust a gossip rag 100% to get the cause of death right. It sells more magazines if you say somebody may have died of aids versus leukemia. People don't care if you died of leukemia but they can talk for months if you died of Aids. I'd be interested in what the family members, spouses or partners of Luther and that Cameo dude would have to say.
I think for the most part people would just prefer to hear or believe the negative not just of celebrities but your everyday citizen in general.

You really need to get your head out of your ass before someone makes you a victim.

Dewrede question was just fine, you don't know unless you ask. Allow me to use the analogy of segregation: being a child that lived through it. Everything fine as long as the power that be (whites) get to control or dictated the terms of our existence. It's always been when blacks do something for themselves, without white control, input, nor "approval".... we get questions of why do you have all black this or that. Such talk is gibberish..... that we've ever lived in a color blind society, that people are acknowledge/judge by the same rules and/or criteria. They may not have been well known or important to you and yours (that's OK) but they were to me and mine. ===== [Edited 11/1/09 12:37pm] ok

I found out about the death of Gene Anthony Ray, from a Wikipedia free encyclopedia article. Under the section,"Death", it stated, In June 2003, Ray suffered a stroke and ultimately died from complications of the stroke on November 14, 2003 in Manhattan, New York. He was 41 years old and HIV positive at the time of his death .
Gene Anthony Ray was in the movie "Fame" as well as the tv series, in the 80's. He was "Leroy". The references listed for this Byrne, Bridget(2003-11-19) "Fame's "Leroy" Dies, E! News Retrived 2006-05-19. That really surprised me. Really sad. He was my favorite actor on the show.

So, yes, I do think race plays a role in whether or not a celebrity death gets reported via mainstream media. Unlike others, I don't cry racism when there is clearly none present. However, unlike others, I'm not going to pretend like I don't see it when it does rear it's ugly head. Whether people want to admit it or not, bigotry of all kinds is alive and well.
