It was printed in 1984 or 85 either a Right On or BlackBeat magazine that he had died of leukemia

That makes more sense.

Allow me to use the analogy of segregation: being a child that lived through it. Everything fine as long as the power that be (whites) get to control or dictated the terms of our existence. It's always been when blacks do something for themselves, without white control, input, nor "approval".... we get questions of why do you have all black this or that. Such talk is gibberish..... that we've ever lived in a color blind society, that people are acknowledge/judge by the same rules and/or criteria. They may not have been well known or important to you and yours (that's OK) but they were to me and mine.

Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor, 24, died on Nov. 27, a day after he was shot at home during a botched burglary at his Florida home. An All-American at the University of Miami, Taylor was drafted by the Redskins as the fifth overall selection in 2004.

This messed up. It's horrible when up and coming black folk die as a result of murder.

yeah but then there's Michael Jackson and he was bigger than Princess Di and JFK Jr, so it kinda averages out, right?

Isaac Hayes got no fanfare though, that was crazy. Also that gay guy from A Low Down Dirty Shame...

This is a really good thread-I had no idea that some of these people had passed on sad Like the guy that played Shonuff, lead singer from Starpoint and the actor that played MJ. Someone said that whole cast of What's Happening is gone? Even the guy on Everybody Hates Chris who played Rog?

I just started reading this list and so far, the majority of men that have passed away on this list has died from HIV/Aids complications sad

Did Luther die of AIDS too?

No one has died of "AIDS" since the mid 90's. The "preferred" cause of death will be listed as the "opportunistic infection" that slipped past the compromised immune system, or the "complication" - (like Pneumonia for example, or liver failure). It's just a matter of semantics. No one (particularly celebrities) wants "AIDS" listed as their cause of death. But be fooled-NOT, HIV and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome are still wreaking havoc across the globe, and has been the cause of many deaths (celebrity & civilian), even in recent years - despite it's many disguises, or whatever euphemism may be used in it's place to make those affected feel better about themselves and/or loved ones.

May Luther be resting peacefully, however his death was "defined".

Sometimes families and/or loved ones don't WANT to be clear about how or exactly when a loved one died, but it doesn't mean their cause or time of death was unknown by ANYONE.

I respectfully suggest that was a euphemism.

Because more often than not the press in the USA/States don't acknowledge the deaths of well known African- Americans unless they have gone "mainstream".

Well, someone froma sitcom is not a huge megastar.

People like Luther Vandross, who was never in the super league, still had his own funeral and SW sang.

Also I can only assume how many racists there are in the USA who don't like to report about dead blacks.

BUT

After all, it's popularity and the people who decide who's death is important or not. Talent, not race should be the reason for coverage.

Did Luther get a good send off, over here in the UK we don't get any news at all, I hope it was a good one off my heros.. sad

I think many of these folk with "questionable" deaths perhaps did die of plain ole cancer or some other disease related to drugs, alchohol and poor diet. I mean you can't trust a gossip rag 100% to get the cause of death right. It sells more magazines if you say somebody may have died of aids versus leukemia. People don't care if you died of leukemia but they can talk for months if you died of Aids. I'd be interested in what the family members, spouses or partners of Luther and that Cameo dude would have to say.

I was being sarcastic with my remark.

I simply don't agree with remarks that certain artists who die, get ignored based on their color of skin.

To put it clear: some people tend to see racism where there simply isn't.

The main answer might be a lot more simple and clear: those artists just werent important / influential / good or great enough to be memorized by the music press.

Yes he did... Fans were allowed to pay their respect for 2 days here in NYC at Frank E Campbell funeral home (same funeral home that had Aaliyah and Biggie) and a big funeral procession through Harlem pass the Apollo and a big televised funeral on TV

Why would they be memorized by the music press when many weren't even musicians or singers? Some were actors, athletes, comedians, a supermodel. Given the variety of black celebs who passed on and the little or no fanfare by mainstream press (code for white press), it's obvious that race played a factor. They weren't important because white people did not recognize them yet the guy who sold Oxy clean gets a two week long coverage. Did he start in any hit movies? No. Did he have any hit records? No. Did he score any touchdowns or stroll the catwalks in European fashion shows? Negative. I'm not saying that Billy Mays is any more or less of a celebrity than the people on this list because celebrity is a relative term, but I am saying that he could be perceived as more famous because he was caucasian. I guarantee you if that black guy who does the State Farm Insurance commericals (or is it AllState) dies, he won't even get the fanfare that Billy Mays did.

Thats your subjective view, DesireeNevermind.

I just dont agree with you: just because certain 'black' musicians / actors / athletes don't get remembered enough according to you, doesnt automatically mean thats a result of racism.

The same happens with 'white' (or asian, or hispanic, or inuit) people who just arent that familiar in the mainstream.

I despy racism, I equally despy people who whine about racism that just isnt there.

Then we will agree to disagree and yes, it is all subjective. You have a totally subjective view when you accuse people of whining about racism that isn't there. Only the person who had experienced the racism would recognize it in all its forms. And yes, the same happens with asian, hispanic and inuit peoples. When white celebs who die are not recognized by their own media (which rarely happens) it is probably because they either weren't well liked, weren't rich enough or weren't attractive enough. Consider it bias within the race.

Some black people still keep using the 'racism card' in cases it simply doesnt apply, those people are smallminded and annoying IMO.

Well then when does it not apply? Give an example so maybe people will understand where you are coming from. It's not enough to say that you personally don't see racism because somebody else personally will.
