Because more often than not the press in the USA/States don't acknowledge the deaths of well known African- Americans unless they have gone "mainstream". more often than not, the press in the US doesn't acknowledge the death of anyone of ANY color unless they are well-known. half the people on this list wouldn't qualify whether they were white or black.

Well, someone froma sitcom is not a huge megastar. People like Luther Vandross, who was never in the super league, still had his own funeral and SW sang. Also I can only assume how many racists there are in the USA who don't like to report about dead blacks. BUT After all, it's popularity and the people who decide who's death is important or not. Talent, not race should be the reason for coverage. I don't recall Milton Supman aka Soup Sales nor songwriter Vic Mizzy being all that "accomplished" but their deaths were duly noted .....being apart of popular pop culture. No issues with that at all, I remember both gentlemen fondly. At the same time, I'm not one to hand-wring, it is what it is. If we don't think ours are getting their props, that's our responsibility to acknowledge our own..... blow our own horn. Thank goodness for the Internet. ===== [Edited 11/1/09 21:31pm]

Dewrede question was just fine, you don't know unless you ask. Allow me to use the analogy of segregation: being a child that lived through it. Everything fine as long as the power that be (whites) get to control or dictated the terms of our existence. It's always been when blacks do something for themselves, without white control, input, nor "approval".... we get questions of why do you have all black this or that. Such talk is gibberish..... that we've ever lived in a color blind society, that people are acknowledge/judge by the same rules and/or criteria. They may not have been well known or important to you and yours (that's OK) but they were to me and mine. ===== [Edited 11/1/09 12:37pm]

I didn't know that Gwen Guthrie had died!!! this list is so sad, neither did I know that the guy from H-Town had died too.
Yeah and umm this list has to be pretty old too since they have Levi Stubbs of "The Four Tops" listed as still alive when he passed a year ago. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Yeah and umm this list has to be pretty old too since they have Levi Stubbs of "The Four Tops" listed as still alive when he passed a year ago. Okay, but Levi Stubbs got soem coverage. But what do you expect? His own funeral live broadcast? The reason it was not reported more vividly is, that people didn't care too much, and that 's not because he was black. If tomorrow the Turtle's lead singer would die, noone would care as well.

It is sad reading that site. A lot of those people were far too young when they died, and a lot were shot or died of preventable diseases. More tragic are all the men who died of AIDs. A lot though were not big big stars. But still this is typical of the Hollywood machine, when your 15 seconds of fame are up, you fall off the radar. I only saw one person who lived past 70 (Katherine Dunham). As a community, we have to wake up, drugs and diabetes along with gunshots are killing too many of us. So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

Ain't that the truth huggiebear... food for thought. We had a columnist in Chicago (Mr. Salim Muwakkil) do a report on the findings of Jonathan Tilove for The Star Ledger in Newark, N.J. about significant % black men "missing" most major metropolitan areas in the US 'bout time the hit close to middle age: Main culprits. Disease: AIDS, drug abuse, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, obesity, and gun violence and the lack of health care.

Okay, you folks sounds ignorant, I didn't know that, that's due to me not being a English Native speaker. But you're advice is always welcome, Timmy84. Okay, I just was not sure, because there were rumours but I did not care much back then. Anyway, I think Luther had the fanfare he deserved. If anything, he didn't have the success he would have deserved. He was like the best singer ever, yet in Germany to young people he is literally unknown.

As others have already pointed out, it is very sad that a lot of the talented black men listed died from HIV or AIDS related diseases. Rest in peace to them all. I hope they find a cure one day. Mindbells9 said: Great Site! I check it like once a month. Ive always found it odd that no one knows how Wayne Cooper from Cameo died. They're saying either in a plane crash in 1981 or of AIDS in 1984. How is it possible know one know how or when he died, but they know he's dead? Thats a little eerie lol
It was printed in 1984 or 85 either a Right On or BlackBeat magazine that he had died of leukemia
