Favorite decade in music

What's your favorite decade for popular music (and why)?

Throughout the several years that I've been an increasingly eclectic music lover (since 13 or 14, I'd say), my answer has varied. I was a big fan of the '80s to start out with (albeit mostly the big superstars like MJ, Prince, and Madge), and then high school came along and I got huge into the '90s and '00s alternative rock/metal scene. That was my main flavor for a long time, but these days, as a college freshman and not even feeling much like a teenager anymore (although I still am... it's weird), I feel as if I've outgrown most of that stuff.

Presently, I am in love with the '60s. I listen to songs like "Waterloo Sunset" by the Kinks and "Scarborough Fair" by Simon & Garfunkel, and I think, "Wow... gems like that are hard to find anymore."

1975-1984

Punk, postpunk, goth, new wave, no wave, synthfunk and disco were all at their peaks during this time. I could listen to nothing but those types of music for days, weeks even. nod

Depends totally on the genre.
Funk and Soul : Early 70s to mid 80s.
RnB: Depends on what we consider RnB but...1987-1997.It went downhill from there.
Reggae: Died, in my opinion, in the very early 90s.
Prince: 1982-1987/ 1993-1996
Hip Hop: 1983-2001, maybe 2002...but hey, there are still great rappers out there but the feeling of the Golden Age will never come back.Today, most people don´t even know what real HipHop is. Rap killed HipHop.

House: Early to mid 90s.( Masters at Work w/La India, etc.)
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

It's hard for me to answer because my tastes feel more scattered & unfocused than ever. My reflexive answer is the 60s because I do think it was a golden age for pop music; I'd say that was really the last time that best pop music was also the most popular music.

But so much - most, really - of the music I like the most came after that era. If I use Sextonseven's yardstick & try to think of what era would keep me happy on a desert Island, I'd probably have to go for 73-82: I'd get a couple of really good Can albums, two of my favourite Fall records & all the treasures that came out of the punk/new wave era.

I think to have a fair opinion you really had to be in that decade to get the full feel of it. I cant sit here and praise the 50's and yet not have lived in them. So i would have to say it varies in the decades i have lived in.

70's: i feel the best ARTIST decade and strongest production time period.
80's: most creative period, everyone was trying to be different and it was great seeing new things tried.
90's: Not a fan really, though things got a little stripped down in rock
00's: a lost decade i say, everyone really is searching but trying to be the same, and the ones being different are doing it for market value not because its who they are as an artist, way too much HYPE not enough deliverance.

My favorite decades:

1960's
1970's & 1980's (tie)
1950's
I've lost the use of my heart, But I'm still alive, Still looking for the life, The endless pool on the other side, It's a wild wild west, I'm doing my best, I'm a soldier of love, Every day and night, I'm soldier of love, All the days of my life.

I think to have a fair opinion you really had to be in that decade to get the full feel of it. I cant sit here and praise the 50's and yet not have lived in them.

1975-1984

Punk, postpunk, goth, new wave, no wave, synthfunk and disco were all at their peaks during this time. I could listen to nothing but those types of music for days, weeks even. nod

Same here. Funk had progressed from the early 70s sound into a more modern late 70s sound, disco was great, and funk from the early 80s progressed even more from the late 70s funk with an even more modern sound. Also, very few crossover funk and R&B songs, the slow jams were great also with a sexy after midnight feel to them, and there was very little adult contemporary coming from the R&B side. Rap was great also. It was actually funk. Hell, rap was damn near disco since the tempo was even faster than funk. Yes, most definately 1975-1984.
