so is Dress You Up on it or not?

And this is what I hate about most comps. The artists does 2 new songs to entice peole to buy the compilation. But those two songs ar eusually crap and forgettable andtaking up space for more smeinal songs that could have been placed on the set.

"Dress You Up" is in this one minute commercial, so I think it's a keeper.

Some songs and videos Madonna likely won't be having a celebration with...

It's just cute. I actually looked this one up because I liked that wink in the "Celebration" promo.
Not her best but what a great bridge.

Even more Debi Mazar. Can't find the original, but this is pretty close. Madonna is just great here. At the very least give us the video on "Celebration"! A great example of Madonna's acting in a video (there's no dialogue and no lip syncing of the song either, but she sells it).

A mini movie. Another must for the video set (before "What It Feels Like For A Girl"). And Walken always has to dance in everything he is in (even if it makes no sense).

..this used to be my childhood dream....Until Madonna smashed it by barely acknowledging the song ever existed.

Not sure if this was already posted on the other thread, but apparently, this is the confirmed tracklist for the single disc:

Hung Up
Music
Vogue
4 Minutes
Holiday
Like A Virgin
Into The Groove
Like A Prayer
Ray Of Light
La Isla Bonita
Frozen
Material Girl
Papa Don't Preach
Lucky Star
Express Yourself
Open Your Heart
Dress You Up
Celebration

hmmm It's okay I guess, but it's shocking that they are leaving off "Live To Tell" and "Take A Bow".This tracklist just proves how absurb it is to release a single-disc Madonna greatest hits set. This CD is leaving off singles that actually went to Number One nuts

"Dress You Up", "La Isla Bonita" and especially "4 Minutes" seem like strange songs to include over the likes of "Crazy for You" and "Live to Tell". I guess she wants it to be completely uptempo.

Awful tracklisting. No coherence in its order or selection. Lucky Star & Dress You Up over Crazy For You, Live To Tell, Secret, Justify My Love, Take A Bow. This whole project is simply proving annoying to me now.

lol, that's why I said it's absurd to even attempt to compile a one-disc greatest hits set. There's just no way to include the biggest hits on one CD.I wouldn't dream of leaving off "Live To Tell" or "Take A Bow" (her most successful single ever).

I think it's more shocking how the 3 #1 ballad hits are left out of the single disc, she's clearly being pushed as a dance artist now...

CrozzaUK, I didn't have a chance to respond to you in the previous thread, so doing it now:

I understand you hold Erotica highly because it was your first full Madonna era, but that's a pattern I noticed, most fans who love Erotica to death have the same experience as you and many of them always go "it was so uncool to love Madonna in that era but I just got into her/was holding on". I wasn't a fan back then, so the project almost does nothing for me, apart from a couple of songs and 2 videos. I think its sound is incredibly dated and it was practically Madonna not being able to move on from a formula she mastered in 1990.
Also, the re-evaluation of Erotica is kind of an exaggerated myth, it's true some publications later on admitted they never even reviewed the music itself, but it's not hard to see it never became a belated critics' darling, and even though fans disagree, her first 4 albums are her best regarded ones (plus ROL of course).
And yes, I know that Slant Mag article, but they regularly revisit some albums, and they actually did the same with AL and it was almost as positive as the Erotica one (not hard to guess they were both written by the same person and by a huge fan).

So I don't see a problem with having only 1 Erotica track on the GH. It has nothing to do with Madonna liking that album or not, it's one of her least relevant eras in terms of commercial success and by putting the title track on it they are at least throwing the Erotica fans a bone because something like "Rain" would have been a much safer choice and would not have represented the overall feel of the era. I know it's not fair for the fans, but I don't find it fair how AL was bashed and how Madonna's non-lead off singles barely got attention these days, we can't do much about that and Warner just has to go with the flow and find the balance. I think the 2 disc GH tracklist is a very nice representation of her career and an Evita song is the only thing missing, really.

That looks suspicious. 3 "Like A Virgin" tracks (including one that has never appeared on any sets), 3 "True Blue" tracks except for the number one single and a favorite "Live To Tell". No "Erotica" or "Bedtime Stories" tracks (Thank God....wouldn't want to remind people of the early to mid nineties!). Also, I would be very surprised if "Revolver" (or whatever the second song/single is) doesn't appear on the single disc. I know the practice of the one disc/two disc sets has been done but I'm trying to think if in any cases they split up previously unreleased songs.

I only really become a Madonna fan right before the "Bedtime Stories" era. I got a CD player for Christmas '93 and the first Madonna album I bought was "Like A Prayer". Than I started to buy the new albums as they come out. I don't remember all that much about "Erotica" except seeing some of the videos occasionally on MTV. It's not that I have such fondess for that era. I have such fondness for the music and the art. "Hard Candy" and "American Life" IMHO are not up to snuff in comparison and the second singles chosen for them didn't perform as well (I don't even think "Die Another Day" was the great shakes). It's just absurd and is typical Madonna. It's a great album and frankly for it to have one single represented is just Madonna rewriting her past. Honestly, it was a bit off that GVH2 only gave us two singles!

"Evita" I understand a bit more. There weren't any smashes (at least not in the US) and it was really a side project that took her away from pop recording for a while. It's almost easy to forget if she didn't remind us every so often by bringing those songs back on her tours.

The 1 disc album is alright.

What I would have done

She should have made a three disc set for this greatest his collection. You just can't fit most of her hits in one disc.

(1982- 1996) Disc 1:

Everybody
Holiday
Lucky Star
Material Girl
Like A Virgin
Dress You Up
Into the Groove
Crazy For You
Papa Don't Preach
Open Your Heart
La Isla Bonita
Live to Tell
Who's that Girl
Causing a Commotion
Like a Prayer
Express Yourself

(1982-1996) Disc 2:

Disc 2:

Cherish
Vogue
Hanky Panky
Justify My Love
This Used to be My Playground
Erotica
Deeper and Deeper
Rain
Bad Girl
I'll Remember
Take a Bow
Secret
Human Nature
Bedtime Story
You'll See
Don't Cry For Me Argentina

Disc 3 (1998-2009)

Frozen
Ray of Light
Drowned World/Substitute for Love
The Power of Goodbye
Nothing Really Matters
Beautiful Stranger
Music
Don't Tell Me
Die Another Day
American Life
Me Against the Music
Hung Up
Sorry
Jump
4 Minutes
Celebration
Revolver

I do agree that Erotica is still pretty much ignored by most critics (at least the poorly informed ones), and it is also probably true that only a select set of fans identify with Erotica the most - for whatever reason. I think my problem with it being so under-represented on this set is that she put so much effort into it at the time. All the videos, photo shoots, promo spots - she really gave this record her all in terms of creativity and effort - and thats why it feels like a significant era to me.

I remember upon the release of GHV2, a lot of critics cited both Deeper & Deeper, and Secret as being two gems from her 'forgotten' period. Secret has stood the test of time amazingly, and i agree Sheps house beats do sound dated, but that house sound is coming back around again so i dont think it would turn people off too much.

Well, maybe they'll do something a la Prince The Hits.

Cd 1, Cd 2 separately, and a Box set with 3 CD'S, what, I think, would work out perfectly well.

Hoping so

looking at that supposed single-disc tracklist, I'm thinking that perhaps the best thing to have done was to have 3 different single-disc compilations (a ballads, a pop, a dance -- or 80's, 90's, 00's -- or however you want to divide it) called "Celebration", each with 1 new track and 17 hits per disc.

and then sell them together as a collected edition around the holidays.

seems like the best way to cover all the ground, let the casual purchaser pick & choose what they wanted and give the hardcore fans something collectible and thorough.

of course you still have the problem of selecting which versions to go on, but then if they'd put some more (as in any) thought and effort into the project, we wouldn't be having that conversation at all. the lazy hodge-podge nature of the tracks/versions they've picked is what is the major problem.

what a waste all around.

Agreed. It should have been at least 3 discs. Let's hope the DVD is worth it.

Here's my attempt at a 3-disc comp, including everything that's going to be on there (although with different versions where appropriate) and stuff that's missing. I went with 18 songs per disc as they are doing, although I'm sure we could squeeze another 4-5 songs on there.

Pop:

1 Borderline
2 Like a Virgin
3 Material Girl
4 Papa Don't Preach
5 True Blue
6 La Isla Bonita
7 Who's That Girl
8 Like a Prayer
9 Cherish
10 Secret
11 Beautiful Stranger
12 Don't Tell Me
13 What It Feels Like for a Girl
14 Die Another Day
15 Hollywood
16 Jump
17 4 Minutes
18 Revolver

Dance:

1 Everybody
2 Burning Up
3 Holiday
4 Lucky Star
5 Angel
6 Into the Groove
7 Dress You Up
8 Gambler
9 Open Your Heart
10 Causing a Commotion
11 Express Yourself
12 Vogue
13 Deeper and Deeper
14 Ray of Light
15 Music
16 Hung Up
17 Sorry
18 Celebration

Ballads:

1 Crazy for You
2 Live to Tell
3 The Look of Love
4 Oh Father
5 Justify My Love
6 Erotica
7 This Used to Be My Playground
8 Bad Girl
9 Rain
10 I'll Remember
11 Take a Bow
12 You'll See
13 You Must Love Me
14 Frozen
15 The Power of Goodbye
16 Substitute for Love
17 Nothing Fails
18 Miles Away
