Director: Jackson movie 'This Is It' is 'a musical mosaic'

By Anthony Breznican, USA TODAY
The Michael Jackson film is called This Is It, but the question for fans is: What is it?
There have been no advance previews, leaving ticket buyers guessing about what they'll see during the movie's two-week run that begins Tuesday night.

The film was assembled from intended promo interviews, rehearsal tapes and behind-the-scenes footage planned for a future DVD of Jackson's never-to-be comeback series of 50 concerts.

Kenny Ortega, the choreographer and spectacle maestro who worked with Jackson on the elaborate London shows (which the King of Pop professed would be his last), was brought in as director when the film deal was struck with Sony Pictures after the singer's death in June.

Ortega, who also made the High School Musical movies, says the job was to take the grab bag of materials and make them work together — somehow.

"It's the puzzling together of remnants to create something that had continuity to it," he says. "It borrows from both the documentary and the concert film idea, but it's neither of the two. … I said to Sony not to promote it as a concert film because it's going to confuse people. We never were a concert. We never got that far. We had three weeks left of rehearsal."

But Ortega says This Is It does feature "wall-to-wall music. You see Michael onstage rehearsing many of the songs that would've appeared in the concert. But there's no one there watching except for a handful of dancers. And 18,000 empty seats."

He calls the finished product "a musical mosaic."

"Sometimes Michael was onstage, and the band was playing, but he wasn't singing. He was watching, listening," Ortega says. "But then he would start to sing (another time), and I had to paste things together to create a full beginning, middle and end performance." The movie will weave in video backgrounds that were designed to play on a giant concert screen.

"This film isn't some magical pill or potion that brings Michael back," he says. "He's very much alive in the context of this film. And there's great joy in visiting with him in that 111 minutes.

"But at the end of it all, there is tragedy here. And that film isn't going to make that go away."

Michael was huge in Africa

for example:

Michael had 27 Top 10 singles in Zimbabwe, 12 being #1. Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous, and HIStory were all #1 albums

He had more than 10 Top 10 singles in South Africa where Thriller, Bad, and Dangerous were #1 also

The Jackson 5 did a very celebrated weeklong tour in Senegal in 1974. A documentary was made and archived (It was on Youtube but taken down. It was shown at a film festival a couple of months ago)

YES- I WAS IN WEST AFRICA the day he passed and people were driving around blasting his music- some people had it on at home. It made me sad to be so far away from home- yet happy because I knew that American media was out of control.
LOVE HARD.

I love the demos, especially Beat It and that's a shocker to me cuz that's a song I usually skip, but not the demo version.

I wonder what Quincy's input really was.

I just downloaded a near-perfect remastered version of Big Boy from iTunes... absolutely stunning song. The opening bass, the backing vocals, MJ's leads...

The J5 had great harmony. MJ's voice was the driving force no doubt, but the brothers sung great together, as shown in that video of Let It Be.

Hahaha lol

In all seriousness though, they were a team. That's why it irks me to no end when people act like MJ couldn't create his own music just because he didn't have the technical side down like Prince. I don't think anyone realizes how hard it is to even come up with a melody. That is probably the hardest part. And MJ created great melodies. You listen to his demos and he has the song made in his head, the other stuff is just what he heard falling into place. People act like its easy, or that everyone does the work for him when that couldn't be further from the truth.

Quincy helped take those melodies and develop them into bonafide tracks. They were a great team. Although I do think Quincy's role, while hugely important, is overstated by some. I'm not taking credit away, but the comments like "MJ wasn't shit without Quincy" really irks me to no end. What was Quincy's involvement in Destiny or Triumph, albums I probably like more than both Thriller and Bad?

Quincy's role was suggesting the best arrangements and musicians for MJ's songs, bringing in good songs and songwriters (Quincy contacted Rod Temperzon!).

How magic QJ's touch is, shows a comparism of Another Part Of Me. The Captain Eo, MJ produced version and the Bad version.

I don't know what people expect from producers? I think their idea is spoiled by modern time producers, who are also writing songs and stuff...

I seriously haven't made a track in close to a year, oh, I be in the lab tryin' but can;t get past the drum pads.

Just two weeks ago, I went to create somethin' and couldn't finish it up.

I think it's my job. Since I've been workin over half a day, I can't create music no more.

Wrote the song called "If Only I Could Find You". I had been listening to Drake's "Sooner Than Later", Nicolay's "Lose Your Way", Alexander O'Neal's "If You Were Here Tonight" and ALOT of Mike.

Liked the lyrics and posted them on Facebook. NMuzak, Kida, seeing_voices, and muthafunka liked it. I went in to record it....MY FIRST TIME EVER RECORDING so me and my boy were learning as we went lol

I played it back....I literally threw off the earphones like I was trying to get a worm out of my ear lol

We're going back on Wednesday to try it again and 2 other songs I wrote called "Imaginary Love Affair" and "Just Too Good"
