"3" To 1: Britney Beats Odds To Debut Atop Hot 100 (First Non-American Idol Song To Accomplish Feat In 11 Years) by Silvio Pietroluongo, N.Y.
October 14, 2009 10:34 EDT Britney Spears becomes the first artist in over three years to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, to be released tomorrow (Oct. 15), as "3" opens at the pinnacle of the chart. Her new track, a racy paean to the joys of three-way sex from the upcoming hits set "The Singles Collection," due Nov. 24, shifts 255,000 downloads in its first week of release, also propelling it to No. 1 on Digital Songs. The title also jumps 38-25 on the Pop Songs chart and debuts at No. 49 on Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay, which ranks songs based on airplay audience on all radio formats. "3" is the first title to debut at No. 1 since Taylor Hicks' "American Idol" victory song "Do I Make You Proud" did so on the chart dated July 1, 2006. In fact, the last four songs to open at No. 1 were all "American Idol"-related. Prior to Hicks, Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven" (July 2, 2005), "I Believe" by Fantasia (July 10, 2004) and Clay Aiken's "This Is The Night" each debuted at No. 1. The last non-"Idol" song to open at No. 1 was Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" on Nov. 14, 1998. "3" is Spears' third Hot 100 No. 1. Her debut single "...Baby One More Time" spent two weeks at No. 1 in 1999 and "Womanizer" spent a sole frame at the top, exactly one year ago this week, on the chart dated Oct. 25, 2008. http://www.billboard.com/...1929.story

I didn't mind her latest singles but this one is horribly boring. And THAT gets a high position? Oh boy

People are buying the whole 'comeback story' not the actual song. Many people love a good comeback story no matter how lackluster and below average the material associated with it is. I hope when Janet's greatest hits album officially drops it newest single, she'll get a number 1 spot too because her new single is actually good. Just my Prince Rogers Nelson

even though it's so close after her brother's death? The greatest hits album and her new album next year were going to happen whether Michael had lived or died, so I don't really get why people keep using her brother's passing against her. Sure, it may help her more than it hurts her, but there's no way of telling how the albums would have done if MJ had lived so it's a 'What If' scenario in the end. For me, Janet's major problems with her last albums were quality of material, bad marketing, and her seeming to be half-hearted about the projects. The song is much better than her previous material and it's a greatest hits album so people who like her popular songs would have probably bought the album anyway...same goes with this new Britney release because it's just a greatest hits album with one new song on it too. For me, Britney will never compare to Janet no matter how many number 1 singles Ms. Spears 'comeback' grants her, but that's just my Prince Rogers Nelson

You know why this is great news....It finally shows the irrelevancy of radio right at the time where they are going to have to pay artists to play their songs....Maybe now they'll actually put some effort into things or it will just die.
Long live Sirius XM (well, live long enough until I get totally bored with it and internet radio is available more easily and is better programmed).

Really? Cause "Circus" was the comeback. After the first two singles, the last ones didn't do that well, but made decent showings. I don't know if this has much to do with promotion, either. I think the fans and other twenty boopers might genuinely like this one.

The comeback was already complete a year ago. Womanizer & Circus were huge hits, If You Seek Amy did fairly well with Radar being the only flop.
But this here certaintly doesn't have anything to do with promotion, cuz there was none. She didn't perform it anywhere, didn't appear on any talk shows to discuss it, and the video ain't even out yet. Impressive if you ask me. This is based off of nothing but radio support and being an amazing digital seller. Bitch could move some serious numbers.

I'm happy for her but I hope she takes a break soon, I don't want another rush released album next year.

I don't think we should beat up on Jermaine or Latoya to cash in if Janet's released a new song and hits album. Everybody in that family should be allowed to succeed or fail based on their own talents. Michael may have been the superstar, but Janet made a name for herself and never relied on Michael to hand her anything unlike many (but not all) of his siblings. If the remaining Jacksons want to cash in on their brother's sudden passing than that's really on them; but, like I initially stated, Janet was going to be releasing these two albums regardless of what happened to her beloved older brother. Maybe neither album will do well in the end; only time will tell. Honestly, a very small part of me is kinda hoping that they don't blow up because it will take the ideology out of people's heads that: 1) Janet's albums succeeded because of Michael's death; and, 2) Janet needs her brother to succeed in the music industry. Neither of these two things are true for me. I loved old Michael's music and even some of his newer stuff, but Janet's albums are truly where my heart lies. Her music and persona offered me something that Michael's didn't and despite what many people choose to believe, the two of them are absolutely nothing alike to me when you actally listen to their songs. All just my Prince Rogers Nelson

even though it's so close after her brother's death? Janets GH album has the power to go number 1 if she pushes it. "All For You" was the last album Janet promoted properly. I say it all the time, Janet has lost her passion for performing. The look on Janets face during Rock Witchu Tour performances were like "DAMN! I can't wait to finish this shit up". Janet is back with Jimmy & Terry so hopefully they'll give her the strength that she needs to push herself back to the top.

Sadly, there are still people who dislike Janet because of the Superbowl which is just stupid and pathetic because it happened 5 years ago and she apologized for it, which I still don't think she should have done. People really need to get over it and move on now. I just hope there aren't people who jump on the Janet fan bandwagon just because of Michael's passing because that really annoys me. This happened after Aaliyah died (Michael too) and it really sickened me because if you don't appreciate them when they're here then what's the point after they're gone. I doubt they're getting residuals and platinum plaques in heaven. Just my Sorry, got waay off topic. Prince Rogers Nelson

In my eyes, there never was a comeback because she never really went anywhere. She's been working since she debuted back in '99. Hell, she was promoting something even when she wasn't making albums and touring. You actually have to go away completely for me to call it a comeback, but that's what it's being dubbed by not only the media but many of her fans so Prince Rogers Nelson

Her fanbase rivals Michael's and Madonna's to me in the dedication and at times fanatical ideals. A few years back, a Britney fan bought her half-eaten corndog off of eBay, so I know they'll buy any music she releases. I don't know which was more disturbing. Someone willing to buy half-eaten food just because their favorite celebrity bit off of it or the person who actually sold it, but either way Britney fans won't let her disappear or retire anytime soon, which can be both a blessing and a curse for Britney in the long run.
