Really? I cannot take Charmbracelet. I have tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and I cannot take that album. I recently pulled it out trying to give it another try and couldn't do it. She just whispered too much for me.

Daydream is the album that made me a true fan. Her albums before that were good, but Daydream did it.

I don't think it's underrated. If the entire album had been in the vein of "All My Life", then yes. But there's a lot of crap on here, from the lead single and its remix to the Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica) cover to trite-as-hell ballads like Lead The Way and Never Too Far.

I think Rick was trying to utilize some of the same elements he used when recording with the MJ girls.

GLITTER was her best and the movie sucked, but 90% of singers movies SUCK, but for some reason this album got shitted on for the movie. I mean Under the Cherry Moon was bad, but PARADE never took the brunt of it, same for Grafitti Bridge, Hard To Hold with Rick Springfield had 4 big hits and sold 3 million in the states, but we all know it sucked royally, even Rick said "that was ego gone wild and me being a whore on camera".

Glitter was her most solid record, it took her out of the comfort zone, she needs that, she doesnt need producers that are nothing more than YES YES YES, someone needs to walk in to see her and tell her, "look its time to challenge yourself"

"We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Yeah, I've heard perhaps 4 or 5 of his albums, and the material from this one really is what I could find myself listening to.

I couldn't even find it on soulseek though. lol I mean that's a p2p -network where you'll have thousands of hits for each Ornette Coleman or Autechre album

i also like the movie, sure it's cheesy, but it's a lighthearted movie. it's like her version of purple rain. there are some nice retro touches there that many people probably missed. and mariah in the gold bikini is the lake minnetonka equivilent

Craptastic movie and lousy lead single ("Loverboy") aside, Glitter was actually a pretty decent album. She captured that 80's sound really well, and she had some great ballads on it ("Lead The Way", "Reflections", "Never Too Far:, "Twister"). And her covers of "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" and "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life", while not as great as the originals, were good send ups. What ultimately doomed the album was her nervous breakdown just prior to its release, which also didn't help that it was released on September 11, 2001.

music typing

Indeed. Loverboy was a horrible choice for a lead single. It was almost like she was trying to release "Heartbreaker" part 2 again.

I don't know people hate this album. I actually think its a good album.

I haven't seen the movie, but just cause the movie was bad, doesn't mean the same applies for the music album.

Other than "Never To Far", which I thought was absolutely stunning, I never cared for the "Glitter Soundtrack". I was really disappointed with the remakes. She didn't make them her own, like she could have.

Not only was "Glitter" the final time Mariah really challenged herself during a project, I stand by the belief that she was the victim of horrible timing and being about 4 years ahead of the music cycle. It's one thing to sprinkle your songs with 80s samples but a song like her remake of "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" was another thing entirely. At the time. The funny thing is I seriously think that if this album had come out in 2005, and the 80s-flavored songs were released as singles, it would have BLOWN UP.

It's her voice's last stand
It IS her best album
It IS her most underrated
...and I hate that the soundtrack has went into the trash bin along with the campy movie. Like someone else said, many other movie/soundtrack vanity projects by other artists resulted in the music being able to rise above the film. "Glitter" is an unfortunate exception.

The only songs that are even seeing the word filler are "Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica)" and "If We", and that's mainly because they barely contain Mariah herself at all. However, both songs have strong input from Mariah and good hooks, fit nicely into the project, and had single potential. While "Loverboy" doesn't necessarily fit the definition of filler, it's easily the weakest link. However, I can forgive her for it because it was a rushed job anyway. The WAY TOO SHORT clip of the original version of the song before the whole J-Lo fiasco sounds a million-times better (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2lr0EsSzv0).

She finally perfected the ballad with "Never Too Far", "Lead The Way" and "Twister". Neither are overdone, marred with annoying production or sacrifice a good melody for screaming. She has yet to top either of them since (though "Circles" and "I Wish You Knew" were good tries). "Reflection (Care Enough)" is still good but it doesn't manage to excite me like the others.

The 80s cuts - "Want You", "All My Life", "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" (she'll sadly never do anything that sounds like it or looks like the great video that goes with it again), "Didn't Mean To Turn You On" are all wonderful. They just work, and are evidence of the one time in her entire career she noticeably stepped outside of her comfort zone. Music was still stuck on bubblegum-pop and hip-hop at that time and I gotta respect her releasing "Glitter" when most people weren't even ready for it.

It's her only album of hers I can listen through all the way through too.

"Butterfly" is sentimental to me (listening to it takes me down Memory Lane) and I do admit that I openly praise it more than "Glitter" but -when it comes down to it- "Glitter" wins. I've never been a Lamb (I used to be a big Mariah fan though) but credit is due here.

Some people would say "Chambracelet" is the most underrated album but the word implies that if more people heard it, it would be thought of more highly...
The clincher there is that the album is -in actuality- horrible and there are, at most, 4 songs that I would ever pull it out for (of the top, "Yours", "Subtle Invitation", "The One" & "Bringin' On The Heartbreak"). I've tried and tried but that album contains both Mariah's weakest vocals and the most boring, monotonous songs of her entire career. If anything, it would probably get a WORSE rap if more people heard it.

Pretty good in depth career review. I have to admit I pull out Glitter as the second most played Mariah album after Emancipation of Mimi. Not because I think it's her best album but because it has her most adventerous and beautiful music on it despite it's faults. Yeah she dabs way too much with Busta and Fab on Last Night A Dj wich actually destroyed the song all together. Then she hardly showed up like you say on If We..however it's still a nice song but should have been on a Ja Rule album as well as "Funkin 4 Jamacia".

And yeah Charmbracelet was one of her worst in my opinion. I uploaded the songs I liked on my ipod and never went back to any of the album cuts for the simple fact that most of those songs did nothing for her career. Westide Connection REALLY? WTH!? As soon as I saw that title before it came out I was like rolleyes MORE of this BS!?!?

I had have a crush on you
Painstakingly I
would conceal the truth
You probably always knew
But I was I'm timid like a child
Inhibited and way too shy
I'd glance but then avert my eyes
All twisted up in my desire
But I am not that girl boy today
Ain't got a lot of time for games
I've waited and I've waited now
It's time for me to tell you 'bout the way...
