The last classic David Bowie album, Scary Monsters is also his best. Throughout the 70s, Bowie was a pioneer of unthinkable talent and foresight. Each of his 70s albums was an adventure that greatly influenced the music that followed. 1980's Scary Monsters offers a capstone to Bowie's epic achievements of the 70s. Following the Berlin trilogy (Low, Heroes and Lodger), David Bowie seemed to be able to do no wrong, but it was hard to think he could top himself. Scary Monsters takes the experiments of that period and extends them to a more human, palatable aesthetic. From the roaring title track to the quirky genius of "Ashes to Ashes," from the paranoid, ultra-hip funk workout of "Fashion" to the truly gut-wrenching "Teenage Wildlife" and "Because You're Young," Scary Monsters is both instantly catchy and memorable. This is Bowie searching the depths of his soul to exorcise his demons. The angry opener "It's No Game" with its comical confrontation with a Japanese woman sets the stage for an emotionally charged listen. The dejected acceptance of "Up the Hill Backwards" reveals a lot of Bowie's thoughts on the world circa 1980: "A series of shocks - sneakers fall apart, Earth keeps on rolling - witnesses falling." "Ashes to Ashes" reflects on decades of drug use and its effects with a new take on "Space Oddity"'s Major Tom. 33 must have been an awkward age for Bowie, as he fiercely demands respect in the guttural "Teenage Wildlife" while dejectedly accepting his loss of youth and its ability to heal on "Because You're Young." This is Bowie's most personal album. He invents no fictitious characters here to deter the attention from himself. This is perhaps the most pure glimpse into the turbulence of a man stretched to the limits of his imagination, ability and health for over a decade. No wonder he took a 3-year sabbatical from the music industry afterward. This album sounds like the final words of a man dying before his time. In a sense, he did die after this album, languishing in his own legend and status for over a decade. Scary Monsters is David Bowie's parting message, a chronicle of his own crucifixion. This was his Lovesexy (the last of his classic era) imo. Or was Lovesexy Prince's Scary Momnsters I mean lol...I see them both in the same light Maybe that's why Imago thinks both are overrated. Check the other thread and give him a smackdown. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

All those Jackson albums from the late 70s to the early 80s:
The Jacksons, Going Places, Destiny and Triumph. There is too much emphasise on Michael's solo work and not enough attention paid to albums like Destiny and Triumph. Give me those albums any day over Bad, Dangerous or History.

anyone who knows this album will know what i mean. it had the worlds first full video album to accompany it, with videos for all the tracks on the album the first album by mick jones from the clash's (who later produced pete docherty in the libtertines) new band big audio dynamite. a mash of hip hop and rock and reggae and movie samples before anyone else mixed these things together. samples that complimented the music instead of creating the music. mariah carey released an album in tribute to one of the singles. the later albums weren't half as great, but they were much better live than in the studio adam ants second album, and the first with the new ants as the original band were persuaded by malcolm mclaren to form bow wow wow with annabella lwin. it was a hit album in the uk at the time, but quickly forgotten about in later years, particularly after the huge success of the follow up album, prince charming, which was written about a short dude from minneapolis [Edited 9/11/09 6:44am]

BAD used to do a great live cover of 1999 at the gigs. the later albums got worse and worse as mick tried to get too many different styles of music on board, and try a bit of rock/rave. it worked well live, but on record it just sounded lame compared to what other people were doing. he had the right idea, he just didn't pull it off very well. malcolm mclaren copied the idea to some extent with buffalo gals and his later albums mixing house music and operah or waltz (i met malcolm the other week actually, saw him talk for nearly 90 mins and then he was hanging at the bar afterwards, right next to me and my mate) i have a ton of live BAD bootlegs, bunch of outtakes and unreleased stuff too. the outtakes are pretty awful though. if you think about the crap they did release, imagine the stuff that wasn't good enough. i couldn't believe that rush was a hit single either, and levi used it as an advert. it was utter shite. apparently the bottom line was used as a theme tune to american football (maybe only in the uk where it was on at about 2am before cable tv was here, and no-one watched it) mick has a new group called carbon silicon, with one of the guys from generation x (billy idols old band)/sigue sigue sputnik(frankie goes to hollywood labelmates on ZTT)/etc BAD had a promo only 12" called lovesensi that had the bass player on the front mimicking the lovesexy cover. it was just 2 instrumental acid house type tracks they made when mick was really ill in hospital. obviously they were prince fans hard fi were influenced by BAD and cover e=mc2 at gigs. mick jones guested with them once or twice to play that and should i stay or should i go and dan donovan was patsy kensits first husband (before she married jim kerr from simple minds, then liam gallacher from oasis, then dj jeremy healey). his dad was terance donovan, the famous photographer who did the classic 60s shots as parodied by austin powers (copying scenes from the movie blow up) [Edited 9/11/09 7:56am]

[Edited 9/11/09 10:31am] exactly. MOST of them should be in a most overrated thread in saying that, i don't think most of the people who have posted on this thread have quite understood the concept of underrated. in keeping with the spirit of the other responses i listed three albums with critical acclaim, thus aren't underrated. again, sales has no bearing on whether an album is overrated or underrated, it's the way that critics and consumers rate the album that relates to the nature of being underrated or overrated. a truly underrated album is one with minor critical or consumer acclaim, thus mediocre reviews and poor sales on a record that's later regarded a classic so in keeping with the true spirit of the thread, perhaps this is THE most underrated album of all time. it had shit reviews, as reviewers and fans alike didn't understand the album which was completely different to the album it preceeded, and initial sales were awful, particularly compared to it's predecessor. it wasn't until years later that critics and fans realised it was years ahead of it's time, and it was regarded as a particularly fine example of it's genre, with a relatively recent deluxe anniversary edition being released

Too many to mention, but my favorite groups who still get little or no attention here in the states are The Smiths(even though they're obviously not a band anymore) and Terence Trent D'Arby. They both had their moment in the sun, but still deserve a lot more respect and airplay than they are given. the smiths had shitloads of critical acclaim, to the point that they could be discussed as one of the most over rated bands of all time TTD also had a ton of acclaim and sales for his first album, he just couldn't keep up with the success afterwards. i don't know his more recent stuff enough, but he generally gets a fair amount of critical acclaim for it, even though he doesn't sell much
